Description:

The Department of History and the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies in the Faculty of the Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in History of the Holocaust. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2026. The successful candidate will also be eligible to be named the Chancellor Rose and Ray Wolfe Chair in Holocaust Studies for a five-year term, which will be renewable following a favourable review. This will be a joint appointment between the Department of History (51%) and the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies (49%).

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in History or a related field, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching with a focus on the History of the Holocaust. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and/or reinforce our existing strengths: http://www.history.utoronto.ca and https://www.jewishstudies.utoronto.ca/ .

Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence demonstrated by innovative methodologies and an exceptional record of sustained scholarship, including a well-received book or books, articles in leading journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at international conferences, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline. Desired specializations are open. Along with a research focus on the experiences of Jewish victims and survivors, approaches of potential interest may include: comparative and/or transnational methodologies; microhistories; and historical intersections that may include disability, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality. Command of languages relevant to the subject area is essential.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application, with required materials outlined below, as well as strong letters of reference.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will teach at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate program and supervise theses at the Honours, Masters, and Doctoral levels in the Department of History and the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies. Undergraduate courses will include introductory surveys of Holocaust Studies and more specialized courses that complement or reinforce existing strengths in modern Jewish history, German history, Soviet Jewish history, histories of genocide and violence, and Jewish literature.
