An electronic manufacturing company based in Johor Bahru is seeking a Safety & Health Officer (SHO) to oversee compliance with workplace safety regulations. Responsibilities include conducting safety inspections, ensuring the correct use of PPE, preparing safety reports, and coordinating safety audits. The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's degree in Safety and Health-related fields and is a Registered Safety & Health Officer. This role offers the chance to significantly impact workplace safety and health practices.
A Safety & Health Officer (SHO) ensures the workplace complies with Malaysia’s Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (OSHA 514) and relevant Factories and Machinery Act (FMA 1967) regulations, especially those related to electronic manufacturing (e.g., machinery safety, chemical handling, ESD safety, etc.).
Conduct workplace safety inspections to identify unsafe conditions or practices.
Ensure PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is worn correctly by employees.
Verify machine safety features (e.g., emergency stop buttons, guards) are functional.
Check fire exits, emergency lighting, and firefighting equipment accessibility.
Brief workers on daily safety alerts, especially for high-risk areas (e.g., SMT line, wave soldering).
Monitor chemical usage and storage (e.g., flux, solvents) for compliance with MSDS.
Attend to any reported hazards or incidents immediately.
Log daily safety activities and maintain inspection checklists.
Review and file HIRARC documents (Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, Risk Control).
Inspect chemical storage rooms, fume hoods, and ventilation systems.
Check status of safety equipment: eye wash stations, first aid kits, grounding straps, ESD controls.
Conduct toolbox meetings with production teams or contractors.
Verify maintenance schedules include safety-critical equipment.
Update safety notice boards and digital safety dashboards.
Audit and replenish PPE stocks (masks, gloves, earplugs, safety booths, etc).
Building the document system & other requirements according to ISO system (ISO 9001:2015, & ISO 14001:2015), RBA etc
A management representative for the ISO integrated system
To handle consultation and communication with interested parties on inquiries pertaining to safety & health policy or system within the company
To carry out any other instruction given from time to time on any matters pertaining to safety & health at the workplace
Any responsibility assigned by company which is related to work scope in environment, health & safety, health and management.
Prepare and submit safety performance reports to management (incident trends, near misses, compliance status).
Conduct formal safety audits/inspections of all areas, including production, warehouse, cafeteria, and dormitories (if applicable).
Chair monthly Safety & Health Committee (SHC) meeting per OSHA 1994 requirements.
Engage in all customers, RBA etc on related safety & health audits; update all the related records on time; refresh workers on safety topics (e.g., lockout/tagout, ESD handling, ergonomic lifting).
Check statutory compliance logs (e.g., machinery inspection certificates, chemical inventories).
Inspect lifting gear, compressors, etc (in line with FMA requirements).
Coordinate chemical exposure sampling/testing (if applicable).
Prepare and submit JKKP reports (JKKP 8, before 15th Jan) – annual accident statistics to DOSH.
Coordinate fire drills and emergency response exercises – in cooperation with BOMBA (Fire Dept).
Review and revise Safety Management System* and SOPs.
Arrange for health surveillance (audiometry, lung function tests, etc.) if exposed to noise or chemicals.
Ensure renewal of mandatory certifications (e.g., confined space, chemical handler, environmental, IE).
Ensure external inspections by DOSH, BOMBA, DOE (Department of Environment) are planned and supported.
Organize yearly refresher training on legal requirements, HIRARC, ERT duties, and confined space entry (if any).
To have attended a certification program for Safety & Health officer certified by NIOSH or other institutional certification provider approved by Malaysia Department of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH).
Bachelor degree with Safety and Health related
Required Registered Safety & Health Officer (Green book holder)
