AS Legal Counsel Iberia within AXA XL will handle daily legal advice requests from local management (especially Country Management and Underwriting Teams) and international colleagues interested in business opportunities in Spain, Portugal, and reinsurance in Latin America. This includes areas such as freedom of services, licensing, insurance policy design, product development, distribution, reinsurance agreements, outsourcing, and corporate law.
You will be part of the Spanish branch Extended Management Team, collaborating with internal stakeholders including the APAC Europe Business Unit and other functions. Your role involves leading and developing the local legal team to provide effective, efficient, and timely legal support.

Responsibilities include:
- Supporting Country Management to enhance governance, compliance, and internal controls aligned with AXA XL's objectives and regulations, including participation in management committees.
- Conducting local legal trainings as needed.
- Reviewing marketing materials and press releases.
- Liaising with authorities and industry associations, managing filings.
- Overseeing local litigations and reporting to the APAC Europe General Counsel.
- Providing wording support and legal advice across business lines, including drafting guidance and post-bind reviews.
- Approving commercial contracts and collaborating with Procurement.
- Monitoring legal and regulatory developments relevant to insurance, distribution, compliance, and finance.
- Supporting XLICSE compliance, including onsite inspections, training, and implementation of supervisory requirements.
- Reporting monthly legal activities as part of branch reporting.
- Managing external legal counsel activities.
- Supporting AXA XL / Group projects collaboratively across departments.
- Leading and developing a legal associate.
- Engaging with internal stakeholders and key AXA contacts in Spain.
You will report to the Head of Legal France & Southern Europe and the Country Manager Iberia.

We seek candidates with these qualifications and skills:
- A Master's degree in Law; being a qualified lawyer is a plus.
- Experience in Legal & Compliance within the insurance sector, in-house or at a law firm.
- Specialization in insurance and reinsurance law, litigation, compliance, and related areas.
- Fluency in English and Spanish; Portuguese is a plus.
- Excellent communication, commercial acumen, and ability to explain complex issues.
- Problem-solving skills and decision-making ability.
- People management experience is highly valued.
