Other Conditions

Fall and Spring Semester; Summer Sessions. Part-time Lecturer applicant pool. Non-tenure, pending availability of funds and actual staffing requirements. Evening, weekend, distance education, television and or off-campus classes for UH Maui College and or Outreach sites (Lanai and Molokai) may be assigned as part of regular workload.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision, to conduct courses in Hawaiian
  • Maintain office hours of at least one hour per week for each course taught.
  • Prepare course outlines and reports related to teaching and student progress.
  • Work under supervision of department chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area.
  • Student and peer evaluations and self-assessment of teaching effectiveness are required.
  • May include instructional assignments involving distance learning.
  • Commitment to community college principles and philosophy is essential.
  • The college strongly emphasizes the "open door" concept and serves a diverse student and community population.

Minimum Qualifications (Hawaiian Language)

All minimum qualifications must be from an accredited institution and met by the effective date of appointment. Due to the rural location of this position, if qualified applicants are not available, those not meeting the minimum qualifications may be considered on an exception basis.

  • Functionally native oral and written fluency in Hawaiian, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:
  • Master's degree in Hawaiian language or literature
  • Master’s degree in Hawaiian as a Second language
  • Master's degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian
  • Master's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language with at least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian language or literature and three (3) years of related work experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian as a Second language and three (3) years of related work experience
  • Bachelor's degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian and three (3) years of related work experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language with at least 12 credits of advanced coursework (300‑400 level) in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof, and three (3) years of related work experience

Degree(s) must be earned from an accredited institution. If qualified applicants are not available, those not meeting minimum qualifications may be considered on an exception basis.

  • Master’s degree (Focus on Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island areas)

Desirable Qualifications
  • The ability to apply knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture to effectively collaborate with multicultural groups and individuals from diverse academic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Native Hawaiian language, history, politics, culture, practices, and contemporary issues.
  • Successful community college teaching experience.
  • Ability to use writing assignments and integrate teaching of appropriate thinking skills into course content as an integral part of students' classroom learning activities.
