About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF KEITH’S TRANSFORMATIONAL WORK

Public Protection & Licensing in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where people like Keith and his team are passionate about keeping our borough clean, safe, healthy and free of pests.

Pest control might not sound like the most glamorous job, but to Keith it’s the best job in the world. As our Senior Pest Control Technician, it’s his task to see that Westminster is kept free of the sort of pests which can cause worry, fear, discomfort and – in the worst cases – illness. He and his dedicated team work tirelessly across the entire borough, from restaurants and cafés to parks and gardens, and from shops and offices to houses and flats.

Keith started his career in research and development for the private sector, before becoming a field biologist and then joining us here in Westminster. To begin with he was on a two-year contract, but when this was about to end he was asked to stay, and he’s been here ever since, working his way up the career ladder, and is now leading his team.

No two days are the same for him and the team, but the best ones are when they’re called out to help a family who are suffering from an infestation of – for example – mice, and this is not only making their lives a misery, but is creating unhealthy living conditions. But once the team have finished their work all of a sudden the family’s lives are transformed, they feel safer living in their own home, and can sleep peacefully at night without the worry discomfort and noise of tiny little feet scurrying around.

And on top of this, he believes that if you love your job, and are passionate about what you can achieve, you can build a fulfilling, rewarding and truly life-changing career at Westminster.

The Role:

As a Senior Anatomical Pathology Technologist (SAPT) you can make your own powerful contribution by ensuring that Westminster residents are treated with dignity and care, even after their deaths.

Overseeing the immensely varied daily operations of the busy Westminster Public Mortuary, you will find an interesting role in which your duties will extend from supporting bereaved families through to upholding the health and safety requirements needed to keep your team safe. Managing a small team of APTs and delegating their workloads, you will take the lead in every aspect of post-death care. From initially receiving bodies into the mortuary through to storing, preparing and releasing them, you will ensure every individual is treated with respect.

Taking the lead in routine, forensic, high risk and defence post-mortem examinations, you will document and manage collected samples, and histology and toxicology records. Crucially, you will ensure your APTs are learning from you every step of the way.

Working with a wide variety of partners, you will keep them informed of any relevant updates, so you will partner with Pathologists, the Coroner’s Court, funeral directors, the Police and more. You will also act as the Person Designate in regard to the Human Tissue Authority.

While the day-to-day operations of the mortuary will be the main component of what you offer, so too will your ability to prepare for the future. As such, your mortuary will act as a ‘Designated Disaster Mortuary’ in the event of a mass fatality incident, so you will have significant input into the council’s Local Mass Fatality Disaster Plan.

We reserve the right to extend or close this vacancy early without warning subject to the volume of suitable applicants, so if you would like to progress your career in one of the country’s highest-profile mortuaries, please do apply at your earliest convenience.

Please refer to the for more information.

About You:

This is a great role for a qualified Anatomical Pathology Technologist who would like to progress their career in one of London’s most iconic boroughs.

To match the requirements of this role, you will therefore have a deep interest in pathology and mortuary services, with experience in forensic and high-risk post-mortem casework. This will include the capacity to carry out multiple evisceration techniques, and you will have advanced reconstruction technical skills. Specifically, you will have a minimum of RSPH Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology, with the willingness to obtain Level 4.

With a focus on protecting the dignity of the deceased, you will have good communication skills, with the ability to lead and inspire your team.

While you will work fixed hours, you will need to take part in our on-call rota, so a degree of flexibility will also be required. This will also be essential if your services are called on off-site, so an adaptable approach will be important. You will also be IT literate, with the ability to plan, coordinate and deliver projects.

Westminster City Council is committed to supporting Care Leavers into the workplace. Care Leavers seeking their first job and who wish to be considered under our scheme, will automatically be invited to interview should they meet the essential criteria for the role.
