Information Systems

The Department of Information Systems invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team.

The Department - Description of the Department

The Department is situated within the Faculty of Commerce, primarily servicing students reading for BBusSc, BCom and BSc (InfSys) degrees. The Department was first established at Rhodes University in 1980 as a sub‑department of the Department of Business Administration (now Management). Today, it is a flourishing, independent Department with a full undergraduate and post‑graduate programme.

Information Systems is a two‑year major that attracts numerous students intent on pursuing careers in either Information Systems or Accounting. All students are required to have completed a first‑year semester course in computing, offered by the Department of Computer Science, before registering for Information Systems.

The Department offers courses at the second, third and fourth (honours) year levels, as well as Masters and PhD degrees by thesis.

Main Objectives

All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research) and community engagement, and recognising differences in executing these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties. Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels.

In addition, an Associate Professor is to provide academic leadership in the following areas: teaching and learning; research and community engagement, and contribute towards the institution’s governance.

The Requirements
  • PhD in Information Systems or equivalent
  • Professional experience in Information Systems or equivalent will be an advantage
  • Considerable teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required
  • Experience in teaching Information Systems, with the ability to teach in the following areas: IT Governance, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Ethics, and Digital Transformation, Systems Analysis and Design, and Project Management
  • Research Supervision of Master’s and PhD degrees
  • An established research group/area
  • Established national profile and emerging national profile in the discipline
  • Track record of administration, management and/or leadership roles

Remuneration per annum (Grade AP)

Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R936,120.00

Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R1,203,447.00
