Vision:

M’Chigeeng First Nation is committed to strengthening the well being of children, youth and their families. This will be accomplished through the development, delivery and service coordination of culturally appropriate prevention programming that will enable each to improve their well-being for attaining a healthy lifestyle that contributes to achieving a safe, caring and healthy community.

Reporting Relationship

The Child & Youth Worker will report directly to the Child & Youth Coordinator and will ensure that internal working relationships are developed with all departments within M’Chigeeng First Nation.

Position Summary

The Child & Youth Worker will be responsible for delivering programs for children and youth within the Community. This role involves organizing and executing a variety of activities aimed at promoting life skills, cultural awareness, and community engagement among young individuals.

The Prevention Worker will work closely with the Child & Youth Coordinator and Professional Services, and Youth Workers.

Essential Functions

The Child & Youth Worker delivers the following programs and activities:

  • Delivery of after-school programs including circles, life skills development, and training sessions.
  • Organize drop-in nights, homework nights, art nights, music jam nights, and summer programming.
  • Facilitate activities that incorporate culture and ceremonies.
  • Help with coordinating and planning youth-led events within the community.
  • Develop and implement new initiatives that support the holistic development of children and youth.
  • Collaborate with community leaders, parents, and other stakeholders to ensure program success.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports related to program activities and participant progress.
  • Ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
  • The Child & Youth Worker will also be responsible for developing and implementing summer programs aimed at engaging children and youth during the school break. These programs offer a variety of activities designed to foster creativity, learning, and cultural connection.
  • Incorporate and promote Anishnabek cultural values, beliefs and practices and Anishinabemowin into program delivery.
  • Ensure the utilization and implementation of the caseworks case management system for program and service delivery.
  • Practice strict confidentiality, privacy and ethical non-bias approaches.
  • Engage with the Community to promote awareness of programs and gather feedback to improve program delivery.
  • Monitor program effectiveness and in collaboration with the Child & Youth Coordinator.

Planning & Development

  • In collaboration with department staff provide input into annual professional development and training plans based on department needs.
  • Work with community resources and partners to create a coordinated comprehensive community plan for establishing an environment that supports the maintenance of healthy lifestyle changes; to enable active involvement and participation.
  • Coordinate interdepartmental annual planning activities for the development of a service delivery process to complement the financial management of program needs.
  • Ensure the development of a departmental workplan.

Financial & Reporting

  • In collaboration with the Child & Youth Coordinator, review, prepare and identify current and future annual budget requirements for the program and ensure maintenance in the levels of funding for program sustainability.
  • Manage and monitor annual program budgets in consultation with the Child & Youth Coordinator.
  • Ensures program statistics and reporting is maintained and quarterly narrative progress reports and monthly financial reports are prepared and presented to the Child & Youth Coordinator.
  • Maintain program documentation and statistics of activities on a monthly and quarterly basis for reporting and annual evaluations.
  • Efficient utilization of caseworks case management software for the program.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Preferred

  • (2) year Social Services diploma or (2) year Child and Youth worker diploma.
  • Experience working with children and youth in a community setting.
  • Knowledge of First Nation culture, traditions, and ceremonies.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in life skills development and training is an asset.
  • Relevant certifications or education in youth work, social work, or a related field.

Minimum

  • Diploma in a closely related field
  • Working knowledge of community resources and development
  • Proven strong leadership with managerial skills and experience
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Strong understanding of First Nations Child & Family matters
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; combined with the ability to negotiate positive results while managing positive relationships

Other Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Always maintains and promotes strict confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of community and external resources that are available to families.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Excellent relationship-building (partnering & networking) skills.
  • Well, organized with ability to multi-task, work well under pressure, and to prioritize workload.
  • Valid Class “G” Driver’s License with personal and reliable transportation.
  • Knowledge of First Nation issues, culture, traditions, customs and practices.
  • Fluency in Anishinabemowin or a willingness to learn.
  • Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) required (Current 30 days, original or certified copy)

CRC/VSS Rationale: M’Chigeeng First Nation and its agents are in a position of trust in services to band member children and/or vulnerable adults, so a safe and secure working environment is mandatory. Applicants must provide a clear VSS Certificate, and the CRC must have a record clear and/or dated of any convictions relating to alcohol, drugs, assault, violence and theft. The CRC and VSS must be current (30 days) and must be an Original.
