The Hertie School in Berlin prepares

We are looking to fill the position of

Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/div) - AFAR (Algorithmic Fairness for Asylum-Seekers and Refugees) project

part-time (32 hours/week).

The contract shall commence as of 01 September 2024 and is limited to 12 months. The successful candidate will be based at the Hertie School Berlin as a member of the School’s Centre for Fundamental Rights.

The AFAR (Algorithmic Fairness for Asylum-Seekers and Refugees) research project is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation as part of its "Challenges for Europe" programme. The project commenced on October 2021 and a range of research has been published and is in preparation. This role is for the final year of the AFAR project.

The position is designed to enable an early career legal scholar of human rights and artificial intelligence (AI) to engage with the AFAR project, both developing an individual research output in this field, and working to support the project research and science communication activities in the final stages of the project.

Your tasks:

The postholder will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Professor Cathryn Costello (UCD), and other members of the AFAR research group. The postholder is expected to:

1. Develop and deliver, in collaboration with the PI, a work plan for one individual research output on the themes of the AFAR project;
2. Contribute to one joint publication with another AFAR team member on the AFAR themes;
3. Support the team’s legal research on theories of fairness, fairness standards and AI, drawing on European human rights and EU law, in the context of automated decision-making in migration and asylum governance in Europe;
4. Arrange and participate in a series of AFAR workshops and dissemination activities across Europe (potentially requiring travel);
5. Together with AFAR team members, support the development of the AFAR Tech Litigation Database;
6. Actively contribute to the academic life of the Centre for Fundamental Rights.

Your profile:

1. Excellent academic track record and a (at least imminently expected) doctorate in law or closely related field, preferably with a focus on AI and human rights in the field of asylum and migration in Europe;
2. Knowledge and understanding of international and EU law in the fields of data protection, AI and human rights;
3. Excellent legal research skills and a proven ability to manage your own independent research;
4. Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary and international team and engage in collaborative research;
5. Previous scholarly publications, commensurate with experience;
6. Very good presentation and communication skills, and ability to communicate findings to diverse audiences;
7. Excellent communication skills in English.
