Job description

The Student Support Specialist plays a vital role in enhancing the educational experience of students by providing personalised support and resources tailored to their individual needs. They are to provide specialist support for students with Special Educational Needs (SEND), with a significant focus on delivering effective in‑class support and interventions to promote their learning and inclusion within the mainstream classroom environment.

Responsibilities

Collaborate closely with classroom teachers to plan and deliver inclusive lessons and differentiated instruction that effectively meets the needs of students with SEND within the classroom.

Adapt lessons and develop in‑class modifications and accommodations to meet the diverse needs of children with Special Education needs.

Implement IEPs, monitor student progress within the classroom setting, assess students’ performance, and track their progress.

In cooperation with the Partnership HOS/Inclusion Coordinator, oversee the day to day operation of SEND within the school.

Deliver small group, individual, and pull‑out support and interventions both within the classroom environment and in designated areas to support Students with learning needs and raise achievement.

To complete to a high standard all SEND administration.

Analyse and act on specialist reports regarding children’s SEND.

Encourage children with Special Education needs to interact and work cooperatively with others and engage all Students in activities within the classroom.

Promote the inclusion and acceptance of the children with Special Education needs within the classroom.

Within an agreed supervision system, plan challenging support and learning objectives to evaluate and adjust lessons/work plans and in‑class support strategies as appropriate.

Monitor and evaluate Student responses to learning activities through a range of assessment and monitoring strategies against predetermined learning objectives.

Provide objective and accurate feedback and reports as required on Student achievement, progress and other matters, ensuring the availability of appropriate evidence, including the effectiveness of in‑class support provided.

Record progress and achievement in lessons/activities systematically and provide evidence of range and level of progress and attainment, including observations of in‑class engagement and learning.

Work within an established behaviour policy (behaviour plan) to anticipate and manage behaviour constructively, promoting self‑control and independence within the classroom and during transitions.

Deliver learning activities to Students within an agreed supervision system, adjusting activities according to Student responses/needs during in‑class support.

Create a safe, productive, and positive classroom environment. Update the Head of Inclusion on the effectiveness of provision for Students with SEND, including the impact of in‑class support strategies.

Comply with all policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security, confidentiality, and data protection, and report concerns to an appropriate person.

Contribute actively to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the school.

Undertake specific tasks related to daily school support, administration, and organisation as directed by the School Principal/Inclusion coordinator.

Accept and carry out any additional responsibilities as determined by Management/Head of School.

Foster and maintain positive, professional relationships with staff, parents, and the PTA.

Engage in relevant professional development and training to improve performance, especially in in‑class support methodologies.

Support the effectiveness of inclusion provision, including contributing feedback to the Head of Inclusion on in‑class support strategies.

Participate in performance evaluations conducted by the designated supervisor.

Complete any other tasks or projects as assigned by the Management/Head of School.

Requirements

Has a degree qualification or a Bachelor's in Special Education Needs.

Minimum 5 years of working experience in the same field.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with students.

Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff across different departments.

Proficient in using student management systems and Google for Education.

Established ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion and professional integrity.

Robust organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail in record‑keeping and reporting, ensuring accuracy and data‑driven insights.

Experience and Knowledge

Commitment to working with students with special educational needs.

Behaviour management skills, with the ability to manage confrontation and challenging behaviour.

Understanding of effective teaching and learning theory and practice of providing effectively for the individual needs of all children through classroom organisation, differentiation and learning strategies.

Knowledge of child development and learning, and various learning disabilities and their impact on students.

Ability to assess students' needs and develop appropriate support plans.

Experience in implementing individualised education programs (IEPs).

Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to help students succeed.
