Job description

We'll inspire and empower you to deliver your best work so you can evolve, grow and succeed - today and into tomorrow. We offer an exciting range of opportunities to develop your career within a supportive and diverse team who always strive to do the right thing for our people, clients and communities.

People are our greatest asset, and we offer a competitive package to retain and attract the best talent. In addition to the benefits you'd expect, UK employees also receive free single medical cover and digital GP service, family-friendly benefits such as enhanced parental leave pay and free membership of employee assistance and parental programmes, plus reimbursement towards relevant professional development and memberships. We also give back to our communities through our Collectively program which incorporates matched-funding, paid volunteering time and charitable donations.

Work-life balance and flexibility is a key focus area for us. We're happy to discuss hybrid, part-time and flexible working hours, patterns and locations to suit you and our business.

About the Opportunity

We are recruiting for a Senior Radioactive Waste Management Consultant to join our team. Due to the rapid growth of our business in the civil nuclear waste management sector, we require more support to deliver and continue to expand our expertise.

We have a leading role in waste strategy, inventory and compliance underpinning the future management of radioactive waste, spent nuclear fuels and nuclear materials. We also support clients with Site End-State decision making and underpinning environmental activities. In the UK, we deliver a diverse range of projects for waste producers, waste management organisations and strategic authorities across all aspects of the waste lifecycle. We are delivering similarly interesting and exciting projects across the globe including projects for clients in Norway, Central & Eastern Europe and Japan.

You will focus on the development and assessment of radioactive waste inventories and characterisation data to support waste management strategies. You will also provide support to other projects in the areas of decommissioning and environmental management. You will have the opportunity to apply your skills to solving real world problems for our customers.

We are committed to the continuing professional development of our staff. You will have excellent opportunities to drive your own progression in areas of technical, management and business development capabilities whilst broadening the wider interests of our company.

We are operating under flexible working arrangements, with a mixture of office-based and home working environments. The role can be based at Harwell, Cumbria, Scrabster or Birchwood and other locations will be considered.

Key Responsibilities:

You will work on a range of consultancy projects for customers including radioactive waste producers, radioactive waste management organisations and regulators, both in the UK and overseas. Work includes a wide variety of activities across the areas of integrated radioactive waste management, spent fuels and nuclear materials and site investigation/land quality including:

  1. Analysing problems and developing solutions.
  2. The development of radioactive waste management strategies including consideration of the most appropriate method for treatment and/or disposal; and high-level strategic studies to support and underpin decision-making at different stages of the radioactive waste lifecycle.
  3. Assessment of different options using recognised approaches such as BAT and BPEO.
  4. Reviewing and assimilating numerical data/information including characterisation data and radionuclide inventories.
  5. Consideration of approaches for radioactive waste conditioning and packaging.
  6. Production of high-quality technical reports on the outcome of your work.
  7. Interactions with and presentation of results to customers and stakeholder engagement activities (including facilitation).
  8. Business development activities.
  9. Delivering work to agreed timescales and cost.
Here's What You'll Need:

  1. Degree in a physical science or engineering discipline OR equivalent training/experience.
  2. Experience in radioactive waste management.
  3. Good technical writing skills.
  4. Flexible, innovative and keen to develop skills.
  5. Adaptable, able to work on a number of varied projects at the same time, prioritising as appropriate.
  6. Able to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
  7. Enthusiasm to apply skills to the solution of real-world problems.
Our Culture:

Our values stand on a foundation of safety, integrity, inclusion and diversity. We put people at the heart of our business, and we genuinely believe that we all succeed by supporting one another through our culture of caring. We value positive mental health and a sense of belonging for all employees.

We aim to embed inclusion and diversity in everything we do. We know that if we are inclusive, we're more connected, and if we are diverse, we're more creative. We accept people for who they are, regardless of age, disability, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, mental health, race, faith or belief, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, and whether you're pregnant or on family leave. This is reflected in our wide range of Global Employee Networks centered on inclusion and diversity.

We partner with VERCIDA to help us attract and retain diverse talent. For greater online accessibility, please visit www.vercida.com to view and access our roles.
