Job Summary
The Transportation Supervisor is an entry-level front-line supervisor responsible for meeting CN’s service commitments by managing daily train operations within a territory or terminal and overseeing unionized train crews. The role involves learning operational procedures, organizing the territory to ensure safe, efficient train departures, and compliance with regulations and CN’s rules. The position may also involve being on-call at remote locations to address customer and main line concerns, managing a 24/7 operation.
Main Responsibilities
Safety Orientation, Understanding, Compliance and Enforcement
- Attend Front Line Supervisor Development Programs to learn organizational, operational, and safety regulations.
- Coach and train unionized employees on safe and productive work procedures.
- Build safety compliance through observations, feedback, and corrective actions.
- Ensure safe operations, minimizing accidents, incidents, and injuries.
- Achieve safety observation targets and support accident and injury investigations.
- Support responses to crossing accidents, injuries, dangerous goods incidents, and leaks, liaising with relevant authorities.
- Train, audit, and enforce Standard Operating Procedures.
- Participate in investigations of accidents and incidents.
Problem Solving and Decision Making
- Attend development programs to understand systems, policies, and decision-making processes.
- Maintain teamwork, respond promptly to issues, and use operational data to improve asset utilization and service reliability.
- Oversee crew utilization, manage delays, and recommend improvements.
Planning and Organizing Workload
- Attend development programs to understand service design and planning tools.
- Coordinate with rail traffic control to manage train line-ups and meet schedules.
- Manage crew productivity and optimize traffic movement.
Leadership and Supervision of Union Workforce
- Understand leadership expectations and enforce collective agreements.
- Communicate company goals, conduct investigations, and manage employee performance and discipline.
Performance Management, Training, and Onboarding
- Evaluate employee performance and conduct onboarding to promote safe work practices.
- Address performance issues and share operational information to foster transparency.
Working Conditions
The role involves irregular hours, working both indoors and outdoors, often in various weather conditions. It requires travel without prior notice, including responding to emergencies, with a strong focus on safety and adherence to collective agreements.
Requirements
Experience
- Industrial work experience demonstrating responsibility and safety compliance.
- Experience with heavy machinery.
- At least 4 years of supervisory experience, management or unionized.
- At least 3 years of railroad experience as a conductor.
Education/Certification/Designation
- High School Diploma.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Certified Conductor or Locomotive Engineer (asset).
- Degree in Business or Logistics (asset).
Competencies
- Industry knowledge, safety focus, and performance tracking.
- Effective communication, decision-making, initiative, and process improvement skills.
- Risk identification and time management.
Technical Skills/Knowledge
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, CN systems (SRS, SAP, PAP), and applications like RTBI, DataCity, SmartYard.
- Knowledge of safe rail operating practices.
- Bilingual in English and French (asset).
