Job Description:
Key responsibilities:
- To become proficient in the machining of components, including milling and turning on conventional and CNC machines in different materials.
- To produce simple working models and drawings of projects using design software such as SolidWorks and Fusion 360, maintaining accurate records.
- Obtain a high level of competence in mechanical fitting and assembly skills, including the use of hand tools and marking out.
- Produce precision components meeting mechanical drawing specifications, utilizing conventional and CNC machines supported by hand inspection tools.
- Collaborate with colleagues to troubleshoot manufacturing issues, advise on best practices, and suggest solutions to manufacturing obstacles.
- Weld non-ferrous components using TIG welding techniques.
Working relationships:
Work under the guidance of workshop staff, reporting to the Head of the Mechanical Workshop, collaborating with other workshop members.
Additional information:
Undertake the Level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship, including:
- Practical skills in hand fitting, turning, and machining.
- On-the-job training and competency development.
- Diplomas in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Level 2 and Level 3) and Machining (Level 2 and Level 3).
Training will be primarily workplace-based with some attendance at West Suffolk College, requiring travel.
Person Specification:
Education / qualifications / training:
- Essential: 5 GCSEs including Grade B/5 in Mathematics, Grade C/4 in English and Science; commitment to the apprenticeship.
- Desirable: Basic Engineering qualification; interest in Sciences.
Previous work experience:
- Essential: Computer literacy, teamwork, initiative in workload prioritization.
- Desirable: Experience with hand, power, or machine tools; practical project experience; ability to produce working drawings and machine programs; experience with 3D printers or laser cutters.
Knowledge and experience:
- Creativity and initiative (desirable).
Independent working:
- Essential: Ability to work independently, meet deadlines.
Communication skills:
- Effective written and verbal communication, following instructions, recording designs.
Personal skills:
- Interest in technical engineering/machining, continuous learning, self-motivation, accuracy, commitment.
