Job description

Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Pharmacy Technician to join our friendly general practice team. This is an exciting opportunity to use your skills and knowledge to support safe, effective, and efficient use of medicines in primary care.

Working closely with our Clinical Pharmacist(s), GPs, and wider multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in improving patient outcomes through medicines optimisation. Your responsibilities will include supporting the repeat prescription process, undertaking medication reconciliation after hospital discharges, assisting with medication reviews, and ensuring medicines are prescribed and used in line with current guidelines.

You will liaise with patients, carers, community pharmacies, and other healthcare providers to ensure safe continuity of care. The role also involves contributing to audits, prescribing safety work, and cost-effective prescribing initiatives, as well as providing education to patients on their medicines within your scope of practice.

We welcome applications from pharmacy technicians working in community or hospital settings who wish to develop their skills in general practice. Full induction, training, and ongoing professional development will be provided. You must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of the general practice team to support safe, effective, and efficient prescribing. Key responsibilities include processing and reauthorising repeat prescriptions under agreed protocols, resolving medication queries, and undertaking medication reconciliation after hospital discharges, outpatient appointments, or care transfers.

You will assist Clinical Pharmacists and GPs in delivering medicines optimisation, including supporting structured medication reviews, audits, and prescribing safety work. The role will involve liaising with patients, carers, community pharmacies, and other healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care and reduce medicines waste.

Additional duties include supporting the implementation of local and national prescribing guidelines, assisting with formulary compliance, and maintaining accurate clinical records in line with practice protocols. You will contribute to quality improvement initiatives, help train and support practice staff on medicines processes, and participate in multidisciplinary meetings.

The post holder will work within their professional scope of practice, maintaining registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and undertaking continuing professional development to keep skills and knowledge up to date.
