Must be able to understand and carry out the orders and directions of the captain. The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: operate cargo pumps, tank/pipeline valves, and manual and hydraulic booms. Will be expected to stand a navigational watch on trips greater than 600 NM.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Stand wheelhouse watch alternating with the Captain.
• Oversee the safety of the vessel, including all installed equipment and inspections thereof.
• Safely make and break tow with barges, handle lines and wires.
• Maintain chart corrections, light lists, Coast Pilots, and other applicable publications for the area of operations.
• Train assigned workers, instruct deckhands in seamanship skills, and the use of all tools and machinery aboard the vessel.
• Assist the captain in barge landings and communicate distances and directions clearly, accurately, and concisely.
• Determine the need for and assign lookouts as necessary.
• Enforce company safety practices.
• Complete accurate paperwork and possess basic arithmetic skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide).
• Maintain professional relations with customers.
• Check oil and water in equipment before use.
• Responsible for general barge maintenance and cleanliness.
• Test hydrostatic cargo hoses and piping.
• Change engine oil and filters.
• Splice barge lines and boom running gear.
• Inspect vessel and barge cleanliness.
• Inventory supplies and order as needed.
• Monitor onboard usage to ensure efficient utilization of supplies.

• Valid Mate Coast Guard license 1600 GT near Coastal or Oceans with radar observer endorsement, Mate of Towing, OICNW, ECDIS, STCW, and PIC barge endorsement.
• Previous experience as a Mate or Master of a tug hauling oil barges preferred.
• Knowledge of Coast Guard and state requirements for transfer operations.
• Completion of Coast Guard approved firefighting training.
• Knowledge of company safety practices.
• Valid state driver’s license.
• Valid first aid certificate and CPR training.
• Complete 24-hour HAZWOPER training within 30 days of hire.
• Physical ability to perform job functions, including pulling heavy lines/hoses, lifting, carrying heavy items, kneeling, climbing onto barges and ladders, and bending/twisting during boat/barge tie-up.
• Ability to understand and use cargo information cards and MSDS.
• Self-motivated with the ability to respond quickly to emergency situations (oil spills, mechanical failures, etc.).

• Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.).
• Work aboard boats and barges using various tools and equipment, including heavy lines, winches, mechanical tools, paint, solvents, kitchen utensils, electrical cords, and safety gear such as respirators and SCBA.

• Flexible schedules and hours, including weekends, holidays, and nights. Willingness to take call outs.
