Overview
Must be able to understand and carry out the orders and directions of the captain. The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: operate cargo pumps, tank/pipeline valves, and manual and hydraulic booms. Will be expected to stand a navigational watch on trips greater than 600 NM.
Responsibilities
The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Stand wheelhouse watch alternating with the Captain.
- Oversee the safety of the vessel, including all installed equipment and inspections thereof.
- Safely make and break tow with barges, handle lines and wires.
- Maintain chart corrections, light lists, Coast Pilots, and other applicable publications for the area of operations.
- Train assigned workers, instruct deckhands in seamanship skills, and the use of all tools and machinery aboard the vessel.
- Assist the captain in barge landings and communicate distances and directions clearly, accurately, and concisely.
- Determine the need for and assign lookouts as necessary.
- Enforce company safety practices.
- Complete accurate paperwork and possess basic arithmetic skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide).
- Maintain professional relations with customers.
- Check oil and water in equipment before use.
- Responsible for general barge maintenance and cleanliness.
- Test hydrostatic cargo hoses and piping.
- Change engine oil and filters.
- Splice barge lines and boom running gear.
- Inspect vessel and barge cleanliness.
- Inventory supplies and order as needed.
- Monitor onboard usage to ensure efficient utilization of supplies.
Qualifications
- Valid Mate Coast Guard license 1600 GT near Coastal or Oceans with radar observer endorsement, Mate of Towing, OICNW, ECDIS, STCW, and PIC barge endorsement.
- Previous experience as a Mate or Master of a tug hauling oil barges preferred.
- Knowledge of Coast Guard and state requirements for transfer operations.
- Completion of Coast Guard approved firefighting training.
- Knowledge of company safety practices.
- Valid state driver’s license.
- Valid first aid certificate and CPR training.
- Complete 24-hour HAZWOPER training within 30 days of hire.
- Physical ability to perform job functions, including pulling heavy lines/hoses, lifting, carrying heavy items, kneeling, climbing onto barges and ladders, and bending/twisting during boat/barge tie-up.
- Ability to understand and use cargo information cards and MSDS.
- Self-motivated with the ability to respond quickly to emergency situations (oil spills, mechanical failures, etc.).
Job Conditions and Environment
- Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.).
- Work aboard boats and barges using various tools and equipment, including heavy lines, winches, mechanical tools, paint, solvents, kitchen utensils, electrical cords, and safety gear such as respirators and SCBA.
Expected Hours of Work
- Flexible schedules and hours, including weekends, holidays, and nights. Willingness to take call outs.
