MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
To ensure manufacturer repair policies and procedures are always followed correctly.
- To ensure service and repair are carried out to the highest standard of quality possible to ensure customer satisfaction.
- To ensure efficient use of material, equipment, and labour resources.
- To control and supervise staff in the use of equipment and tools to effect repair and diagnosis of vehicle faults and service to vehicles.
RELATIONSHIPS AND PERSONAL ACTIVITIES
- Directly responsible to the Service Manager.
- Responsible for technicians, apprentices, workshop cleaners, wash‑bay staff, diagnostic and repair equipment, tools, gauges and measuring equipment.
- Relationships with customers, company staff, manufacturer's representatives and other representatives, Health and Safety Officials and training authorities.
OBJECTIVES AND KEY TASKS
Improved profitability
- Ensure maximum effective use of equipment and labour ensuring high productivity output.
- Ensure all chargeable materials are recorded on job cards for invoicing.
- Ensure minimum wastage of consumable materials.
Customer Satisfaction
- Ensure a customer satisfying level of service and repair quality.
- Ensure vehicle cleanliness is maintained during service and repair.
Health and Safety
- Ensure staff take all precautions necessary to effect health and safety in the workshop.
- Ensure customers are protected from any possible dangers or hazards in the workshop.
LIMITS OF AUTHORITY
- Capital expenditure: No purchasing authority.
- Operational expenditure: To procure equipment and tools necessary for the efficient running of the workshop, with the written authority of the Service Manager.
- No staff appointment or dismissal authority.
- To discipline workshop staff on routine matters.
MAIN JOB FUNCTIONS : Staff
- Ensure staff are trained to enable high levels of quality and efficiency.
- Ensure jobs are fairly and correctly allocated to technicians.
- Supervise tests and ensure correct use of equipment and document security.
- Cross departmental disciplines.
- Ensure all repair orders are correctly costed, operational numbers and defect codes are forwarded to the costing office for pricing.
- Maintain reasonable control over sublet suppliers, using competent suppliers at the best costing and who can provide timely delivery.
Security
- Ensure customer's property is secure.
- Ensure all materials and parts drawn from the Parts Department are accounted for.
- Ensure all equipment and documentation and materials are accounted for.
Administration
- Ensure progress of jobs through workshop.
- Authorise consumable and internal parts requisitions.
- Authorise non‑productive time spent on vehicles or in the workshop.
- Ensure health and safety procedures are observed and always maintained.
- Circulate new and up‑to‑date manuals and literature for new vehicles or techniques.
- Add fixed rate units to all job cards before submission to the costing and claims department.
- Workshop controlling.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- The ability to supervise a labour workforce.
- The ability to assess and report on staff performance.
Qualified Automotive Technician
- The ability to discuss and negotiate agreeable solutions to customer problems.
- The ability to maintain personal technical knowledge and skills.
- BSI experience.
