A healthcare organization in Gauteng is seeking a Laboratory Assistant I to support the clinical laboratory department. Responsibilities include processing specimens, performing tests, and communicating with staff about specimen issues. The Laboratory Assistant I is responsible for supporting and providing customer service in the clinical laboratory department. This includes processing specimens and performing waived or moderate testing as directed by the Clinical Laboratory manager or director. Responsibilities encompass pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical duties, including receiving, processing, labeling, and distributing specimens, as well as testing specimens if indicated. The role requires effective communication with nursing and laboratory staff regarding specimen issues. The position demands a thorough understanding of laboratory specimens and HIS / LIS computer systems. Lab Assistants may also perform clerical duties as needed. Adherence to established protocols and procedures is essential to ensure quality patient results. The Laboratory Assistant I reports to an assigned Supervisor and works under the supervision of Technical Staff.
High school diploma or equivalent
Ability to read, write, and comprehend English; perform computer functions; and process paperwork
Professional telephone etiquette and effective verbal and written communication skills
Problem‑solving abilities when managing multiple complex variables
Organizational skills, self‑motivation, and ability to work in a fast‑paced environment
Ability to work assigned shifts
Comfort working with human specimens (body fluids, urine, etc.)
Completion of training in inventory handling and active participation in unpacking and storing inventory items
Ability to perform additional duties as assigned by the manager
