Teaching Assistant – Specialist PRU Setting (Bristol)

Pay: £14.92 per hour Contract: Temporary Cover with Long-Term Opportunities Location: Bristol

Are you an experienced and compassionate support professional looking to make a difference in an alternative education setting? We are seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join a Bristol-based Pupil Referral Unit, supporting pupils who require specialist provision outside of mainstream education.

About the Role

This is a rewarding opportunity to work with children and young people who present with a range of needs including SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health), SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), and those at risk of exclusion. You’ll support learning, engagement, and emotional wellbeing in a structured, therapeutic environment.

This role is offered as temporary cover, with the potential for long-term placement for the right candidate.

• Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with complex needs.
• Assist in the delivery of tailored learning activities under the guidance of teaching staff.
• Support pupils in managing behaviour and emotional regulation using trauma-informed approaches.
• Help maintain a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and external agencies.

• Experience working in a PRU, AP (Alternative Provision), or similar specialist setting.
• Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills.
• Understanding of safeguarding and inclusive education practices.
• Ability to build trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced trauma or disrupted education.

• Training in Team Teach, Makaton, or other relevant interventions.
• Knowledge of EHCPs and how to support individual learning plans.
• Resilience, empathy, and a proactive approach to supporting vulnerable learners.
