Job Description
THE BRAND
TOPSHOP and TOPMAN are iconic British fashion brands with 60 years of heritage. Headquartered in London, the Brands have over 2 million customers across the globe through the ASOS platform and generate brand sales of c£200m. Our mission is to unlock the best of fashion for everyone, with creativity and innovation at our core.
Following the formation of a Joint Venture between ASOS and HEARTLAND in October 2024, ASOS is creating a standalone cross-functional team within ASOS dedicated to unlocking the huge growth potential of the TOPSHOP and TOPMAN brands. The brands will now benefit from ASOS infrastructure and resources while enjoying the creative freedom and agility of standalone brands.
The next 12 months will see the expansion of the brands’ offline and online retail presence, including the launch of Topshop.com and new wholesale partnerships.
THE ROLE
The Senior Designer on Topshop Jersey plays a critical role in one of the brand’s key departments, driving the success of this category through delivering best-in-class product, effective trend building, and strategic planning. Working collaboratively with Design, Merchandising, Buying, Sourcing, and Technical teams, they are responsible for a Jersey range that serves our wholesale business and the global Topshop customer.
You will identify and drive the product strategy for Jersey tops, working with the design team and collaborating with the wider Retail team to deliver a commercial and trend-led range.
You will be collaborative, organized, and strategic, delivering trend direction and product that ensures Topshop stays ahead of the market in newness and trends, always looking to push the range for our global markets.
The role will contribute to design direction and ensure that product design aligns with the strategic vision, focused on delivering a compelling and commercial offer appropriate for our target customer.
What you'll be doing...
- Researching, developing, and creating a standout range, including developing big deals, key seasonal shapes, with a focus on newness in fabric, trend, and items for the TOPSHOP customer.
- Developing a cohesive range for the department, ensuring that product reflects the Brand strategy, the range is without gaps or duplication, and that the season is logically and commercially planned.
- Creating new and unique products to deliver a range that caters to various Topshop customer profiles and end-uses, including volume pieces, key seasonal items, and standout press pieces.
- Presenting trend research to other teams, including Buying and Commercial leadership, as relevant.
- Collaborating across departments and functions, including Marketing, to clearly communicate the design & department vision.
- Identifying and executing new product opportunities in the market swiftly to ensure Topshop leads with innovative trend pieces.
- Contributing to business-wide initiatives and projects, championing change positively.
- Using sales data and insights to design commercially relevant, fashion-forward ranges.
- Anticipating the needs of the Topshop customer through sales data, customer profile analytics, and trend research to deliver commercial product ranges.
- Sourcing new fabrics, techniques, and trimmings.
- Working closely with in-house Buying teams to create new products each season and shape product direction, ensuring alignment with brand and divisional strategies.
- Collaborating with the Technical team on fits weekly, identifying and developing new silhouette blocks for a commercial range.
- Building relationships with suppliers and advising factories on direction, silhouette, construction, key details, fabrics, trimmings, and artworks.
- Managing, developing, and motivating junior team members, providing clear guidance and feedback.
- Supporting and deputizing for the Lead Designer as needed, such as attending product reviews or brand strategy sessions.
- Working collaboratively with other functions to deliver the Topshop strategy.
- Supporting the development of lean, agile processes within the department.
- Motivating and engaging the wider design team through positive role modeling.
Qualifications
We’d love to meet someone who has…
- High level of WW Jersey experience, including basics and fashion ranges.
- Experience in print and graphics direction, working with print and graphics teams and external suppliers.
- Experience working with manufacturers and sourcing in the Far East, India, and Europe.
- Ability to deliver world-class, creative, and commercial product, including trend-leading and must-have items.
- Strong trend research skills and inspirational direction to ensure the Jersey department delivers innovative products.
- Excellent eye for print, graphics, embroidery, and embellishments.
- Experience sourcing fabrics across multiple territories, bringing new ideas to the collection, including jersey basics and fashion pieces.
- Deep understanding of current trends, retail market conditions, and global opportunities.
- Proven track record in design within a fast-paced retail environment.
- Ability to influence and gain buy-in from teams and leadership to maximize opportunities.
- Confident presentation skills to communicate performance and strategy effectively.
- Strong understanding of the Topshop customer and segmentation, reflected in decision-making.
- Ability to build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and other functions.
