With more than 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students, two campuses (Lethbridge and Calgary), seven faculties and schools, and more than 2,500 employees, ULethbridge is Lethbridge’s second largest employer. Faculty and staff come together to contribute, each in their own way, to establishing ULethbridge as Canada’s destination university. In 2022, Lethbridge was recognized as one of Canada’s top small cities.

Rank

Instructor II or Instructor III, commensurate on experience.

Position Description

The University of Lethbridge, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Music invites applications for a limited-term Instructor specializing in Electronic and Popular Music Production. The appointment is for 9 months, from August 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026.

Primary teaching duties are within the Digital Audio Arts (DAA) program, with assigned courses including:

  • Technical Ear Training (MUSI 2560)
  • Electronic and Popular Music Production (MUSI 3850)
  • Music Design for Film and Digital Media (MUSI 4636)

All courses will be face-to-face delivery and involve applied/practical components in studio settings. Course assignments may be modified as the department’s needs evolve through the year.

The successful candidate will also contribute to providing an excellent student experience through engagement in service activities, which may include committee service to support the DAA program and participation in student recruitment and retention projects.

The Music Department strives to promote Indigenous resurgence, decolonization, and anti-racism. It is committed to accessibility, inclusion, and equity. Successful candidates must demonstrate that they share these commitments and that their teaching practice will contribute to their realization. Candidates who identify as members of groups historically underrepresented in post-secondary education, including Indigenous peoples, racialized individuals, persons with disability, and women and gender minorities are particularly encouraged to apply for this position.

Qualifications

  • Sufficient knowledge of current technologies, industry practices, and approaches to audio engineering and music production to teach the courses listed above. Knowledge and expertise may be demonstrated through a combination of graduate-level education (e.g. Master’s degree in Music Production or related field), professional/industry experience, and/or other training and experiences outlined by the applicant.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a teacher and/or mentor to students or emerging artists.
  • Ability to teach a diverse student body, incorporating innovative and equity-informed pedagogical approaches, and contributing to decolonization and Indigenization through teaching activities.
  • Ability to support students in applied and experiential learning and to support students’ professional development.
  • Ability to contribute to departmental culture in a positive manner, through collegiality, reliability, professional communication, conflict resolution skills, and collaboration.
  • Experience with or interest in recruitment activities is an asset.

Salary for the 9-month term ranges $44,705-58,500 ($59,606-78,000 annualized), commensurate on experience.

How to Apply

Interested individuals should submit an application. The application package should include:

  • Cover letter describing interest in the position and areas of teaching expertise.
  • Evidence of professional/industry accomplishments (discography, or related material demonstrating excellence in audio production).
  • Evidence of effectiveness as a teacher and/or mentor, such as sample course outline/syllabus, examples of course materials (lecture notes, assignments, rubric/grading criteria), student evaluations, and/or classroom observations.
  • Names and contact information for three qualified references. References will be contacted for shortlisted candidates and will be asked to provide reference letters at that time.

All electronic documents, images, audio, or video must be accessible via links online and active throughout the period of the search and/or be submitted using an established internet-based file transfer service.

Review of applications will begin on April 21, 2025 and will continue until a successful candidate is selected. This position is subject to approval by The University of Lethbridge Board of Governors.
