Key Responsibilities for the Position:
Deposit Trends and Transaction Analysis:
- Work together with the accounting and finance team to monitor and analyse daily deposit trends, transactions and betting activities to identify any irregularities or potential compliance issues.
- Identify suspicious punter play / activity and conduct deep dive into player’s account for purposes of flagging, monitoring and combating future occurrences from the same or similar client by compiling case analysis / motivation for reasonable suspicion.
- Analysis of unusual deposits - third party account abuse and depositing, discrepancies in deposit history and amounts, as well as inconsistent vs consistent use of methods, non-allocated deposits and parties involved.
Deposit method Analysis:
- Investigate and analyse transactional activities to detect and work together with payments and fraud team to implement methods that could prevent potential fraud within the business.
- The role of the junior compliance officer would be to compile clear and concise documentation to support suspected fraud, including but not limited analysis of specific deposit method activity, transaction / depositing history, bank statements, correlation with other players and deep Due Diligence with Voucher partner to confirm region and location of purchases.
- Provide recommendations on improving fraud risks / additional documentation when handling such customers.
FICA compliance and Reporting:
- Attend and participate in FICA seminars and stay up to date on new FICA regulations and implementation of such requirements within YesPlay.
- Compile Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs) and other FICA reports to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
Internal Fraud Reports:
- Propose and develop mandatory compliance report methods to assist with the compilation and analysis of internal fraud reports, identify key scenarios requiring improvement and provide write up of incident / case to warrant additional development work from tech team in order to enhance fraud prevention measures.
- Identification and consistent monitoring of unusual betting patterns, such as (but not limited to) sure bets or arbitrage betting, Account Takeover Attacks (ATO), bonus abuse and identity theft. It is crucial for you to find a routine, mechanism and reporting system in which you could manually, and later, use advanced automated tools and triggers to identify such activity.
Withdrawal Activity and Transactions:
- Work together with the accounting and finance team to monitor and analyse suspicious withdrawal activity, requests or documentation uploaded / provided to the accounting team, including but not limited to high withdrawal sums, low withdrawals for big winnings, unverified bank accounts, frequently cancelled withdrawal requests.
Credit Card Transactions and Chargeback Analysis:
- Conduct thorough reviews of credit card transactions, bank statements, and chargeback analysis to mitigate potential risks and ensure compliance.
Training and Development:
- Develop and deliver training programs for internal staff on new policies, regulations, and compulsory courses, including Responsible Gambling and Self-exclusion, training and education programmes shall include preparation of tests, internal manuals/memos preparing, compiling and conducting regularly training schedules and attendance registers for internal workshops pertaining to high compliance failures across customer support agents and general staff.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation:
- Conduct regular risk assessments in product and customer journey / activity to identify potential compliance risks and develop strategies to mitigate these risks effectively by compiling reports and practical business recommendations to motivate change in policies and potential improvement to product / internal compliance processes by working closely with Operations team.
Regulatory Compliance Monitoring:
- Stay abreast of changes in local and international gaming regulations, ensuring the company's processes align with legal requirements.
Collaboration with Regulatory Bodies:
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with regulatory bodies, ensuring open communication and cooperation to address compliance-related inquiries or audits.
Customer Due Diligence (CDD):
- Using the existing KYC methods and customer verification methods, recommend, implement and oversee customer due diligence procedures to improve CDD methods throughout customer journey on YesPlay, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
AML (Anti-Money Laundering) Monitoring:
- Monitor and investigate any unusual or suspicious betting activities that may be indicative of money laundering, taking appropriate actions.
- Compile new reporting methods and ensure reporting is compiled for each case as necessary.
Internal Controls and Policies:
- Review, enhance, and implement internal controls and policies to strengthen the overall compliance framework, fostering a culture of compliance within the organisation.
Incident Response and Reporting:
- Develop, implement and ensure adherence to existing incident response plans to address any compliance breaches within business promptly, ensuring thorough reporting to relevant stakeholders.
- Compiling and maintaining a file of all investigations in accordance with the:
i. Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (as amended) and any internal privacy policy manuals;
ii. WCGRB punter complaints;
iii. Suspicious transactions and activity of punters (relevant for FICA).
Technology Integration for Compliance:
- Research and collaborate with the technical department to integrate advanced
- technologies for fraud detection and prevention, enhancing the overall efficiency of compliance processes.
- Review existing compliance flow measures in place, determine how they may be improved on front end and back end, compile use cases and substantial evidence to support improvement that align with current business processes and resources.
Periodic Audits and Assessments:
- Conduct periodic reviews and assessments of the company's compliance policies, including but not limited to Privacy Policy, General Terms and Conditions, PAIA / POPIA, FICA, general work codes and staff policies, recommending improvements and implementing necessary changes together with the Operations team.
Communication of Compliance Updates:
- Communicate regular updates on compliance policies and procedures to relevant teams and stakeholders, fostering a strong understanding of compliance requirements across the organisation.
Employment Equity Committee and B-BEE Compliance:
- Work together with HR and management to ensure internal compliance and establishment of Employment Equity Committee and
WCGRB Compliance:
- Work together with Operations team to assist in the compilation, dispatch, maintaining and monitoring of all matters related to the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, including but not limited to:
i. Preparation and Submission of Terms and Conditions for Promotions, as well as any new games and certifications;
ii. Due dates, internal reports and formal responses to WCGRB regarding punter complaints;
iii. Preparation and dispatch of communication to WCGRB;
iv. Compilation of customer support internal reports in the event of a complaint, including internal investigation and deep dive into issue, compliance of agent and/or order of events leading up to complaint;
v. Monitoring and following up of game approvals submitted by YesPlay;
vi. Attendance of compliance summits including but not limited to responsible gambling, as well as annual meetings for industry role players pertaining to industry standards and proposed amendments to regulations.
vii. Good relations with industry regulators and authorities.
Continuous Professional Development:
- Stay informed about industry best practices and emerging trends in compliance, participating in relevant training and professional development opportunities.
- These additional responsibilities aim to provide a more comprehensive overview of the Junior Compliance Officer's role in the online betting industry, ensuring a robust compliance framework to meet regulatory requirements and maintain the integrity of the business.
Key Skills & Qualifications:
- Education: A degree in Law (Admitted associate is a bonus).
- Work Experience: At least 1 Year Professional Work Experience.

- Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving skills to assess compliance issues.
- Tech-driven: Confident in using tools to streamline processes and documentation of processes and reports.
