Job Description

Business Development/Marketing

1. Provide process engineering input to marketing and proposals by providing technical assistance to support Business Development and Marketing strategies.
2. Produce cost effective, conceptual & timeous proposals.
3. Determine customer’s requirements.
4. Communicate with customer and review customer’s enquiry documents and evaluate requirements and constraints.
5. Define the process/plant scope of work.
6. Produce the conceptual design and generate alternatives.
7. Produce and agree mass and energy balances and conceptual PFD’s.
8. Contribute to basic design criteria document through preliminary equipment & motor list, preliminary control criteria and major equipment & material specification.

Project Life Cycle

1. Provide Process engineering input to project implementation and Project set up.
2. Provide input to generate scope of work, schedules and budgets.
3. Refine scope of work, review contract and design discipline design criteria and engineering deliverables.
4. Define Battery limits and control and report scope variances.
5. Generate detail discipline schedules and review overall discipline requirements.
6. Contribute to procurement and identify long lead items.
7. Determine/prioritize work breakdown structure.
8. Issue data to planner.
9. Review/co-ordinate & adhere to schedule of implementation.
10. Control and report variances.
11. Generate and develop detail discipline budgets and identify indirect/resource costs.
12. Adhere to budget implementation and control and report budget variances.
13. Consolidate documentation for monthly project progress report.
14. Provide input to monthly discipline reports.
15. Provide feedback to functional manager.

Design
Generate The Following Engineering Deliverables

1. Detailed mass & energy balance.
2. Detailed PFD’s.
3. Detailed equipment/motor list.
4. Equipment specifications.
5. Data Sheets (Develop & Approval).
6. Operation & Control Philosophy.
7. Detailed functional specifications.
8. Write operating manual.
9. Generate detailed plant process guarantees.
10. Check and review design layouts, including vendor packages.
11. Adhere to schedules and budgets.
12. Issue, review and control final process design documentation.
13. Check and obtain approval of calculations and specifications.
14. Consult with specialists for novel or unusual designs.

Client Relations (Internal & External)

1. Prepare approved vendor list and issue enquiry documents.
2. Perform technical and commercial adjudication.
3. Obtain client approval.
4. Participate in pre-award meetings, review quality plan and contract.
5. Review quality/expediting reports and witness key manufacturing hold points.
6. Provide technical backup for expediting team.
7. Proactively maintain information flow.
8. Attend co-ordination meetings.
9. Advise changes early.
10. Co-ordinate deliveries.
11. Adopt flexible approach.
12. Respond to needs of other disciplines.
13. Ensure awareness of Company vision and departmental goals/objectives.

Plant commissioning

1. Produce and submit commissioning plan/manual.
2. Determine critical path and establish commissioning sequence/schedule.
3. Define and secure resources.
4. Define battery limits of commissioning.
5. Define commissioning systems/procedure.
6. Produce commissioning files, including commissioning documentation.
7. Ensure commissioning meets project requirements.
8. Issue remedial inspection reports during construction.
9. Monitor installation and commissioning checklists.
10. Arrange and co-ordinate commissioning meetings.
11. Conduct on-site commissioning.
12. Provide technical back-up for site QA team.
13. Assist in performance testing in terms of design base.
14. Supervise and train operating personnel.
15. Contribute to close-out report and adhere to close out procedures.
16. Provide post-commissioning process support.
17. Ensure plant optimization and plant operating analysis.
18. Ensure regular visits/communications with client.

Legislation, Policies & Procedures

1. Lead design reviews and Hazops.
2. Ensure legal compliance with design codes and authorities.
3. Contribute to public participation process as per National Environmental Management Act (NEMA).
4. Enforce process veto rights.
5. Maintain standards.
6. Adhere to and update Company standards.
7. Utilize engineering tools/systems.

1. Consult with specialists for novel or unusual designs.
2. Review industry standards making use of network periodicals, attending shows and conferences.

Qualifications

• Chemical Engineering or Extractive Metallurgy or Minerals Processing Degree from a recognized tertiary institution.

Skills And Experience
A proven experience of 5 to 25 years’ experience executing projects in the EPC/EPCM environment; ideally within the mining and minerals (preferred) or petrochemical sector.

• Construction & Commissioning - Understanding of on-site construction work such as commissioning or customers and suppliers’ interactions.
• Risk Analysis - Ability to identify project and activities risk from any point of view including knowledge of hazard and operation HAZOP.
• Value Engineering - Ability to optimize a process by adding value either as saving in cost or simplifying the process.
• Process Flow Diagrams - Ability to produce, understand and deliver Process Flow diagrams.
• Testing - Knowledge of testing techniques and procedures including specifications and interpretations of test works.
• Equipment & Components - Knowledge of process, control, quality, electrical etc. equipment specifications, suppliers and features (including equipment installation and components).
• Legislation & Standards - Knowledge of sector specific law (e.g. Engineering, safety reqs, Audit regulations, Insurance laws etc.) and knowledge standard specifications (e.g. Plant layout requirements, etc.) including the ability to integrate these standards.
• Technical Documentation - Ability to create, understand and communicate technical specifications.
• Economical Awareness - Knowledge of economic fundamentals and ability to make estimations and proposing alternatives.
• Process Simulation - Ability to simulate processes by means of software or other methodologies.
• Mass balance - Ability to calculate (using software and spreadsheets) the mass balance of a process.
• Process Design Criteria - Knowledge of parameters required to design the process.
• Piping & Instrumentation - Diagram Ability to produce, understand and deliver piping and instrumentation diagrams.
