JOB TITLE: Specialized Consultant, Warehouse & Distribution (WD)

POSITION OPENINGS: 1 (Existing Position)

STATUS: Permanent, Full Time

LOCATION: Home Office Based. Candidates must live within 25km of Thunder Bay, Sault Ste Marie, Timmins or North Bay. Candidates maintain a private and safe workspace, and have a high-quality internet connection.

HOURS OF WORK: 35 hours/week

Role

Reporting to the Manager, Northern Region, the Specialized Consultant, Warehouse & Distribution (WD) provides specialty services and solutions to our customers in the regions and works across teams to share their expertise. The Specialized Consultant will work within their team, and with communities of practice, to ensure annual goals and objectives aligned to the WSPS strategic plan, and Ministry priorities are accomplished.

The core accountability of the Specialized Consultant is to deliver high quality solutions and services that require subject matter expertise gained through experience and education with the goal of improving overall health and safety, enhancing productivity, quality and morale in the workplaces they work with. The Specialized Consultant will work with others in their practice and across WSPS to enhance the quality and consistency of current services and solutions across the province and ensure WSPS stays current and relevant to workplaces by channeling industry and evidence-based research into new services and solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Note: Percentages refer to approximate % of time spent on each area, over the course of a given year.

1. DELIVER SERVICES/SOLUTIONS TO CUSTOMERS (60%)

  • Deliver specialized services to customer that facilitate a reduction and mitigation of risk for workplace injury and illness through the: hazard identification, qualitative and quantitative risk assessment, and recommendations for improving tools, equipment, layout materials, environment, work practices, organizational factors and other processes.
  • Assess customer needs and works diplomatically within political framework of unionized and non -unionized workplaces. Liaise with various stakeholders (e.g., MLITSD, senior management, supervisors, workers, staff) to assist customers in complying with relevant Occupational Health and Safety legislation, standards and best practices.
  • Execute solution delivery to customer as per scope and term outlined in the agreement/contract which may be part of funded project work or for a fee. In collaboration with Account Management, follow up regularly with customers to ensure ongoing service satisfaction.
  • Ensure the successful planning, implementation and delivery of high-quality customer solutions through collaboration with the Consulting Services Manager, AM/or SAM, and other Specialized Consultants to review customer plans, scoping (as required), and participation in the peer review process

2. RELATIONSHIP-BUILDING, SOLUTIONS AND PROMOTIONS (30%)

  • Nurture, develop and maintain relationships with assigned customers while delivering service
  • Participate in solution development/review as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) supporting the development of programs, solutions, products and services.
  • Support plans for consulting/instructor readiness, in collaboration with the other Specialized Consultants in the practice, and the Consulting Services Manager
  • Participates in external committees (Ministry, CSA standards) and specialty communities of practice, as assigned, and brings forward insights and perspectives gained from participation. May be asked to lead various projects in the specialty.
  • Promote and represent WSPS as a “brand” ambassador at key events/speaking engagements, trade shows and with committees, institutes and associations

3. INTERNAL TRANSITION, SUPPORT AND ADMINISTRATION (10%)

  • Maintain report and documentation as required and in accordance with corporate policies
  • In collaboration with Account Management, ensure customer information is maintained through entries in CRM and other business systems as required
  • Prepare consulting reports in accordance with internal standards, processes, procedures and expertise development plans.
  • Complete Quality Assurance/Document Review of consulting reports in accordance with internal standards, processes and procedures as assigned by a CSM
  • Provide instruction, demonstration or coaching support as assigned
  • Convey any identified, potential project risks and possible mitigation strategies to the Consulting Services Manager or Senior Consultant, as appropriate
  • Completion of administrative duties (Expense submission, etc.)
  • Support other duties as assigned

4. CONTRIBUTES TO A HEALTHY AND SAFE WORK ENVIRONMENT (at all times)

  • Complies with all Health and Safety policies, procedures and company rules established in WSPS Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).
  • Contributes to promoting a healthy, safe, and respectful culture.
  • Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.

Skills and Experience

Minimum:

  • 4-year university degree in health and safety with specific education and training in their specialty
  • Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in mechanical / structural Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, or
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), Engineer in Training (EIT), Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or CRSP with direct warehouse racking/material handling experience (3-5 years’ experience
  • 5-7 years’ direct experience in warehouse racking application in industrial/manufacturing setting,
  • 10 years indirect experience with industrial exposure including understanding and consulting on how to apply legislation, standards and requirements relevant to the specialty
  • Understanding of national /international warehousing racking, material handling, and lift truck safety standards i.e. CSA standards including OHSA & Regulations for Industrial Establishments.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety, including legislation and technical standards
  • Knowledge of Adult learning principles
  • Technical qualifications conducting audits and assessments
  • Facilitation/Instruction skills in various settings and levels of employees/management
  • Ability to work in a team environment/collaboration
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office Applications

Preferred:

  • Current Health and Safety designation (i.e., CET, P.Eng, CHSC, CRSP)
  • Professional in Material Management (P.MM) is preferred
  • 7+ years’ experience in the WD specialty/focus area in the manufacturing, service and agricultural sectors

Additional Requirements:

  • Candidates must live within 25km of Thunder Bay, Sault Ste Marie, Timmins or North Bay, maintain a private and safe workspace, and have a high-quality internet connection.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Access to a vehicle that meets minimum MTO safety standards
  • Maintains a home office in a safe manner and have a high-quality internet connection
  • Provide an original criminal background check at your own expense prior to commencing work with WSPS the criminal record check document must have been issued no more than 30 days prior to first day of employment.
  • An all-employee meeting (Staff Days or equivalent) will be organized annually. All employees are required to attend the annual meeting in person. Occasional team meetings may be required in person.
