Join Our Team – Casual Facilities Technician – Sioux Lookout – Kenora District Services Board (kdsb.on.ca)

Situated along the Trans-Canada Highway between the neighbouring city centres of Winnipeg and Thunder Bay, the District of Kenora is comprised of several communities in Northwestern Ontario, offering an experience in nature like no other. With its main administration office in Dryden and other office locations and ambulance bases across the District, the Kenora District Services Board (KDSB) is the integrated service delivery agency dedicated to improving everyday lives through early learning and care, housing, paramedic, and social services.

Through our continued growth, we are currently seeking to hire a Casual Facilities Technician located in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, to join our Infrastructure team. Key responsibilities include:

  • Complete preventive maintenance and repairs as directed by the Maintenance Coordinator and daily work order system, including general carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work (within the scope of the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) Continual Safety Services (CSS) Program).
  • Operate, monitor, troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance on HVAC systems, fire alarm systems, emergency power systems, and renewable energy systems.
  • Complete move-out repair and suite preparation between tenancies, including general cleaning, demolition, and necessary repairs.
  • Complete groundskeeping tasks including lawn care, snow and ice removal, and maintenance of walkways.
  • Participate in KDSB’s Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Plans, including aiding tenants during fire alarms and maintaining fire logbooks.
  • Participate in KDSB’s Asbestos Management Plan (AMP), including monitoring and inspections of asbestos containing materials (ACMs).
  • Maintain and service maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Show vacant suites to prospective tenants and conduct unit inspections.
  • Participate in the after-hours call-out process for emergencies.
  • Assist in monitoring contractor compliance with regulations and Board policies.
  • Provide relief coverage for co-workers and perform other duties as assigned.

Successful candidates will have or be able to:

  • Knowledge and experience in building operations and maintenance practices, with skills in trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and HVAC.
  • Understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Ontario Building Code, and the Ontario Fire Code.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with good organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and possess adequate computer skills.
  • Completion of the Operation of Small Drinking Water Systems WCWC course and Limited Systems Operator certification when assigned to specific communities.

Qualifications will include:

  • Requires two years’ related experience and one of the following:
  1. Completion and certification under an Ontario College of Trades (OCT) Apprenticeship Program and possession of a relatable Tradesperson Certificate, or equivalent training.
  2. Certification through the Building Owners and Management Institute Canada (BOMI Canada) as a Systems Maintenance Technician (SMT) or equivalent certification.
  • Consideration for those eligible for the OCT Trade Equivalency Assessment process.
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check must be provided.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • A valid Ontario Class G Driver’s license is required.
