Job description

Working autonomously at an advanced clinical and leadership level to instruct and coordinate delivery of patient care and KPIs, within the aims of the role and wider pilot.

Provide leadership and management to the Band 7 Epilepsy Nurse Specialists within Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust and provide an advisory and supportive resource to the Band 7 Epilepsy Nurse Specialists recruited to the other Acute Trusts within BOB ICB as part of the Pilot

Main duties of the job

This job is supported by Buckinghamshire Oxford and Berkshire West Integrated Care Board (BOB ICB) on behalf of the NHS England.

The purpose of this role is to develop excellence in Paediatric Epilepsy Service Delivery within Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and facilitate learning across the BOB ICB system footprint, including supporting the other acute trusts within the ICB to meet the KPI's within the pilot. This will include co-ordinating and reporting data to the BOB ICB Epilepsy Integrated Delivery Network to report into the CYP Transformation Programme. The role will support the provision of care for CYP with Epilepsy, including supporting the continuity of care across tertiary, secondary, primary, community and school health and mental health services where applicable.

The objective is to demonstrate the value of Epilepsy Specialist Nurses (ESNs) working across a system and across traditional healthcare-setting boundaries. We will ideally be looking to particularly work with, and improve outcomes for, those from areas of higher deprivation or with additional needs such as medical complexity, learning disability and autism, or transitioning to adult care.

Person Specification
Academic / Professional Qualifications and Training
  • NMC Registration
  • Educated to masters level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area.
  • Extensive knowledge of specialist areas, acquired through post graduate diploma or equivalent experience or training plus further specialist knowledge or experience to master's level equivalent.
  • Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development.
  • Must have an understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy and appreciate the implications of this on engagement.
  • Should have an appreciation of the relationship between the Department of Health & Social Care and individual provider and commissioning organisation.
  • Leadership and Management Training.
  • Independent prescriber V300.
Knowledge / Experience
  • Advanced theoretical and practical specialist knowledge across the range of Paediatric epilepsy underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience.
  • Substantial broad experience relevant to area of practice, with evidence of managing/ leading a team.
  • Advanced clinical assessment and history taking skills to enable accurate assessment and diagnosis of complex conditions appropriate to Paediatric epilepsy.
  • Advanced clinical diagnostic skills including the ability to interpret EEG reports, blood tests and interventions ordered.
  • Experience of using data and information in planning and providing services.
  • Previous involvement in network or system level working and/or implementing pilot projects.
Communication Skills
  • Must be able to provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information, and negotiate with senior stakeholders.
  • Negotiate on difficult and controversial issues including performance and change.
Analytical
  • Problem solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands.
  • Ability to analyse complex facts and situations and develop a range of options.

  • Must be able to use initiative to decide relevant actions and make recommendations to Sponsor/ Manager, with the aim of improving deliverables and compliance to policies.
  • Ability to make decisions autonomously, when required, on difficult issues, working to tight and often changing timescales.
  • Experience of identifying and interpreting National policy. Experience of researching best practice (globally, private and public sector), interpreting its relevance and processes/ practices which could be implemented successfully to achieve system reform (advising on policy implementation)
Physical Skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office with intermediate keyboard skills, Electronic Patient Records, and other relevant Trust and ICB clinical systems.
  • Able to collate and clearly present information.
