Overview

To provide professional leadership for the whole department, of both teaching & non-teaching staff, having responsibility for delivering high-quality teaching, with the aim of helping students develop a broad base of skills through practical, investigational and theoretical work at all key stages, as well as contributing to the overall ethos, work and aims of the Academy.

Leadership & management
  • Ensure effective, high-quality teaching along with developing innovative, non-traditional approaches to the curriculum in order to ensure appropriate access and achievement for all students.
  • To be accountable for student progress and development within the subject area.
  • To raise standards of student attainment and achievement within the whole curriculum area and to monitor and support student progress.
  • Manage the resources of the department within the limits of the delegated budget and in accordance with the Academy's financial procedures.
  • Ensure that appropriate performance management arrangements are in place and maintained in the department and that a robust programme of professional development is designed and maintained (this includes provision for non-teaching staff and non-specialist teachers).
  • To lead departmental team meetings, prepare agendas and be responsible for managing minutes.
  • Ensure that robust procedures are in place to monitor the quality of teaching and learning outcomes throughout the department.
  • To create a positive ethos and a shared understanding of the importance of the subject area within the Academy, and of the short-, medium- & long-term plans for its development.
  • To identify and promote best practice within the department.
  • To support departmental teaching & non-teaching staff, ensuring that they understand and are actively implementing the key aspects of the Academy's Behaviour Policy.
  • Support the homework detention process at the Academy.
  • Ensure that all Academy policies and procedures are implemented and applied consistently by all staff in the subject area.
  • To support, facilitate and monitor the progress of the subject development plan, to ensure that it makes a contribution to the whole School Improvement Plan (SIP).
  • To monitor regularly the work of subject team members, ensuring they are adhering to Academy policies including marking, classroom practise and homework setting.
  • Provide professional leadership to a team of teachers
  • Support, encourage, monitor and appraise when necessary, colleagues within the department.
  • To supervise & advise on classroom teaching, particularly with trainees, new teachers and ECTs.
  • Monitor colleagues' use of schemes of work and ensure that course coverage occurs at an appropriate rate.
  • To manage cover requirements within the department when colleagues are absent.
  • To observe lessons on a regular basis to evaluate the quality of teaching and to identify and promote good practice within the subject area.
Teaching & learning
  • Plan, prepare and deliver purposeful and productive lessons to assigned classes.
  • Develop schemes of work and resources in line with curriculum requirements, ensuring effective teaching and progress of students within the subject area.
  • Ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students in the subject area, in accordance with the Academy's aims and policies.
  • Monitor student performance within the department, identify gaps and implement strategies for improvement.
  • Ensure that all students are well prepared for exams, both internal and external.
  • Develop and support strategies to encourage students to choose to study your subject area at GCSE.
  • Mark classwork according to departmental and Academy marking policies, giving appropriate feedback and maintaining records of students' progress in their subject.
  • Select and use a range of different learning resources and teaching styles, appropriate to subject and topic.
  • Research new topic areas and maintain up-to-date subject knowledge.
  • Undertake report writing and the award of internal grades as required.
  • Maintain knowledge of all students in each year group, and the action being taken to promote their progress and development.
  • Be prepared to innovate and devise imaginatively varied ways of teaching their subjects to inspire students.
Administration
  • Devise assessments which accurately monitor students' knowledge, skills and progress.
  • To ensure that subject team members fulfil Academy requirements for reporting to parents and recording Academy data.
  • To use data effectively to identify students who are underachieving in the subject and create a plan of action for them.
  • Ensure timely and accurate printing of subject exams for the half-term tests and mock exams.
  • Ensure that all students are well prepared for exams, both internal and external, and liaise with the Exams Officer to ensure correct and timely entry of students for external exams.
  • To work with the Finance team ensuring that budgets and orders are monitored and completed accurately.
  • To work with the HR and Administration team to ensure trips, events paperwork and cover requirements are all completed accurately and within the correct timescale.
  • To liaise with Heads of Year, Form Tutors and parents about student performance and matters of discipline.
  • Manage student behaviour in the classroom, establish an orderly working environment and ensure the safety and good conduct of the students, following the guidance in the Academy's Behaviour Policy (and the Disciplinary Framework).
  • Enforce the students' code of conduct and uniform requirements.
Other
  • Support and foster the aims of the Academy.
  • Make themselves familiar with the contents of the Staff Handbook, the Academy's aims and policies and endeavour to follow these closely.
  • Ensure that they are familiar with the Academy's health & safety guidance and be responsible for their own health & safety, as well as that of their students.
  • Carry out such duties, including cover for absent colleagues as per the Academy's policies in line with reduced timetable, as are allocated to them by the Senior Leadership Team, punctually and efficiently.
  • Attend staff meetings, parents' evenings, INSET sessions & similar important functions both in & out of normal Academy hours & participate in the main Open Day event for prospective parents / students.
  • Notify their Line Manager and Assistant Headteacher as early as possible if they are going to be absent from the Academy, setting rigorous and appropriate work, by following the Academy's policy for notifying.
  • Attend relevant in-service training each year with the consent of their Line Manager.
  • Take part in the Academy's performance management scheme and appraisal.

The duties and responsibilities listed above describe the post as it is at present. This role will be reviewed annually as part of the performance appraisal process and the post holder is expected to accept any reasonable alterations that may from time to time be necessary.
