Overview
Exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Practice Nurse to join our friendly East London general practice. You will join a team of Practice Nurses and Healthcare Assistants and will undertake all aspects of the practice nurse role including cervical screening, baby immunisations and chronic disease management. This role provides strategic and professional leadership and continuous improvement within the practice. You will be joining a team of three nurses, two health care assistants and one assistant practitioner in addition to the wider team which comprises GPs, Pharmacists and Physician Associate. The practice is a teaching practice, and we provide patient services to a richly varied, multicultural population which includes families, students and professionals. Experience in General Practice as a Senior Practice Nurse is essential. We encourage informal visits to our Health Centre.
Responsibilities
- Lead on clinical governance, regulatory compliance (including CQC and IPC), and patient safety systems.
- Collaborate with partners, practice management, and external stakeholders to ensure best practice and patient outcomes.
- Manage governance, risk, and compliance systems across the practice.
- Provide strategic and professional leadership to the nursing team, ensuring high standards of patient care, clinical governance, and alignment with the practice’s objectives.
- Be responsible for a number of clinical areas (health promotion, chronic disease management, health prevention) and lead in reviewing clinical policies and procedures.
- Initiate and maintain health screening and promotion clinics for identified practice population areas, modifying systems or making referrals as necessary.
- Manage nursing care for patients with chronic disease, using personal recall systems and practice computer systems for recall and screening input.
- Provide specialist care for registered patients in areas such as: Asthma, Hypertension, Diabetes, COPD, Cervical Smears, Contraception, Baby immunisations.
- Provide routine treatment in general clinics (e.g., wound management, blood tests, ECGs).
About us
Our Health Centre was purpose-built in 1987 and is owned and maintained by the Partners. It has 21 clinical rooms, a large educational room and undergraduate training room, and an administrative wing for administrators, secretaries, and managers. We are a patient-centred, evidence-based practice focused on continuity of care and developing patient services. Every patient and their family are allocated to a named GP upon registration. We are part of the Poplar & Limehouse Health & Wellbeing Network with three other local practices, formed in 2006 to improve health care provision. Partners hold external roles locally, including lecturer posts at Queen Mary University of London and leadership roles at the CCG and Local Medical Committee. We are an Approved Training Practice for GP training for medical students from Barts & The Royal London.

Job responsibilities
- The senior practice nurse will be responsible for a number of clinical areas such as health promotion, chronic disease management, health prevention, and leading in the reviewing of clinical policies and procedures.

Qualifications and Skills
Essential
- UK Registered Nurse with NMC
- Minimum 2 years post-registration
- Experience working in General Practice as a Senior Practice Nurse
- Demonstrate an understanding of audit
- IPC knowledge
- Cervical Cytology
- Child and Adult immunisations
- Care of Long Term Conditions (LTCs)
- Wound care experience
Desirable
- Mentorship training
- Trained in anti-coagulation
Knowledge and Experience
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
- Strong IT skills; competent in Office, Outlook; IT systems (EMIS, Internet)
- Good interpersonal skills and time management
- Knowledge of clinical governance and ability to work as part of a team and autonomously
- Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure
