OVERHEAD LINE (OHL) ENGINEER

A little more about your role…

As an Overhead Line (OHL) Engineer working within the UK Energy business, you will be responsible for working as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver the power transmission infrastructure that will deliver Net Zero to the UK Energy System. WSP has a significant workload that will offer the opportunity to develop yourself and others over the next decade, with over 300km of OHL to design.

This is an excellent opportunity to…

1. Design overhead power line systems, including the selection of structures, conductors, and insulators.
2. Develop detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and design documentation using software tools such as PLS-CADD, AutoCAD and Microstation.
3. Conduct site surveys and assessments to gather data for design purposes.
4. Perform technical calculations and analysis to ensure the structural integrity and electrical performance of overhead lines.
5. Ensure designs comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
6. Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, and other stakeholders to integrate design requirements into project plans.
7. Review and approve design modifications and provide technical support during construction.
8. Conduct design reviews and quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy and completeness.
9. Stay updated with the latest advancements in overhead line design and technology.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

1. Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline, preferably electrical, civil or mechanical engineering.
2. Experience of using PLS CADD/TOWER software.
3. Prior experience in overhead line engineering up to 400kV.
4. Prior experience on upgrading work projects such as utilisation of High Temperature Low Sag conductors.
5. Knowledge of conducting galloping studies, EMF and Field Effects Calculation, Wake effect, AC Interference for Gas pipelines would be a plus.
6. The ability to travel to projects occasionally.
7. Preferable – Attained / working towards chartered engineer status.
8. Preferable – National Grid BP141 OHL Authorisation.
