We’re looking for someone to lead marketing for the Octopus Energy business in Germany, but there are probably some things you should know…

We don’t rely on agencies - we really don’t, not for creative, production, or even media. We have a fabulous team of in-house designers, UX, writers, and front enders. We do our own media buying. You could say, in fact, that we’re half agency, but we’re your favourite ever client, the one you secretly yearned to work at.

We’re pretty obsessive. We think about our customers a lot. A lot, a lot. We answer emails from customers, we join in on social media (and I mean we, as leaders do), and we constantly think about what makes great experiences, great stories, and great reasons for people to join us.

We’re looking for someone who’s worked their way around the marketing mix and can turn out some good metrics, but actually, what you really really know is humans. You can put together a brand pyramid, but it makes you cry inside a little bit because actually you feel what a brand is, why people choose it (even where that might seem illogical), and you’re just a little bit fascinated about why people make the choices they do.

You’ve led a team, and we don’t mean just managing FTEs - you’ll happily work with no direct reports because your enthusiasm means awesome people will follow you, and you’ll get stuff done. You’ll have direct reports, but you won’t measure your worth in how many, in fact, the opposite.

You work hard and smart; you put in effort where you know it delivers the most value - writing out an agenda for a meeting kills a little bit of your soul.

You have a burning desire to turn your skills into something meaningful. You enjoy the pace of the commercial world, but you'd rather not continue in FMCG or juggle endless agency jobs; you want to be delivering something more sustainable to the world.

And finally. We have to be honest; we find that people from traditional businesses often struggle here. When we say we work agile, we mean agile. We don’t work to backlogs, and we don’t write business cases, but we prioritise effectiveness and efficiency above all else. We expect accountability without process and responsibility and responsibility without rigid hierarchy. We get stuff done by knowing what’s right, and sometimes that’s hard. Therefore, experience in scaling, agile, customer-centric businesses will definitely help you at Octopus.

This leadership role reports directly to the CEO of Octopus Energy Germany and looks after a team to focus on the company's brand, PR, online marketing, and our overall growth in Germany!

• Support all aspects of our marketing operation, lead, train and guide our marketing team
• Research and analyse marketing trends, demographics, competitor products, and pricing, and develop marketing plans
• Develop and execute our overall Marketing, Brand, PR strategy in alignment with our business strategy
• Create and manage annual events to engage partners, customers, generate leads and promote brand awareness
• Run the brand identity in Germany
• Manage and measure the ROI and KPIs of the department and campaigns being run
• Oversee social media accounts for customer engagement and employer branding purposes
• Work with the team on the website: design, tone/messaging and conversion strategy
• Establish an online communication strategy for blog content
• Be a true partner to our marketing team at our London HQ
• Develop and secure department budgets

• To be fluent English and German
• Several years of experience within fast growing, consumer focussed businesses
• In-depth knowledge of mass sales in the residential market
• An understanding of traditional and emerging marketing channels
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to adapt communication style to achieve maximum impact on relevant situations and audiences
• Knowledge of social media and its different uses as communication and customer service channels
• Proven Leadership ability and teamwork mindset
• An ability to propose different, unconventional ideas that help to work in new innovative and creative perspectives.
