Job Description

The primary function of this role is to overhaul, repair and maintain all mechanical components of heavy machinery used at our granule production plant. This position will report to the Maintenance Supervisor and must comply with all safety requirements and protocols for working in a hazardous environment. This position is part of the IAMAW, Lodge 692 (Union), and as such the successful candidate will be required to join and be subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Plant Description: IG Machine & Fibers Ltd. at Ashcroft is a production facility that processes, colors, and ships granules used for roofing shingles.

Plant Location: IG Machine & Fibers Ltd. 3745 Barnes Lake Rd, Ashcroft, BC

When you join us, you will be:

  • Ensuring operation of machinery and mechanical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements on engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines; following diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications; troubleshooting malfunctions.
  • Locating sources of problems by observing mechanical devices in operation, listening for problems, using precision measuring and testing instruments.
  • Removing defective parts by dismantling devices, using hoists, cranes, hand, and power tools, examining form and texture of parts.
  • Determining changes in dimensional requirements of parts by inspecting used parts, using rules, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments.
  • Adjusting functional parts of devices and control instruments by using hand tools, levels, plumb bobs, and straightedges.
  • Fabricating repair parts by using machine shop instrumentation and equipment.
  • Maintaining equipment, parts, and supplies inventories by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed equipment, parts, and supplies; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt.
  • Conserving maintenance resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Preparing mechanical maintenance reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting parts, equipment, and machinery.
  • Cutting and welding metal to repair broken metal parts, fabricate new parts, and assemble new equipment.
  • Repairing and maintaining the operating condition of industrial production and processing machinery and equipment.
  • Recording parts and materials used, and ordering or requisitioning new parts and materials as necessary. Recording repairs and maintenance performed.
  • Maintaining continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Contributing to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Must have a valid British Columbia Industrial Mechanic License.
  • Having a full set (up to 24/1”mm) of metric standard tools is an asset.
  • Exposure to mechanical devices, pneumatic controls, and welding/cutting.
  • Prior experience in a manufacturing environment is an advantage.
  • Must be able to read mechanical drawings.
  • Must be able to work shifts as well as some extended hours and weekends.
  • Qualified applicants will have good interpersonal and problem-solving skills and will be able to work with other trades and operators.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds on a routine basis.
  • Must be able to walk and/or stand 50-75% of the shift.

Hours/ Days / Schedule: The hours of work will be primarily Wednesday through Saturday (40 hours, day shift).
