ABOUT INUVIALUIT REGIONAL CORPORATION (IRC)

IRC was created in 1984 to represent the Inuvialuit and their rights and benefits obtained under one of Canada's oldest comprehensive land claim agreements. With assets over $1 billion, not including vast land holdings, IRC is responsible for corporate investment, land management, and a broad range of social, cultural, and economic programs and services benefiting Inuvialuit. Its subsidiaries have interests in grocery, manufacturing, property management, transportation, and significant dealings in the oil and gas industry.

Since its inception, IRC has experienced considerable growth, and its structure and operations have become increasingly complex. Combining local government and service delivery, community development, investment, and operating business divisions, all managed by a single back office, the organization has an array of complexities for the executive staff to navigate. There is an emphasis on fostering understanding, healing, and resilience in a region brimming with unique social challenges and immense potential for transformative change.

ABOUT INUVIALUIT INVESTMENT CORPORATION (IIC)

The Inuvialuit Investment Corporation (IIC) is a key subsidiary of the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC), established through the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA) to manage a significant portion of the financial compensation received from the Agreement. IIC is responsible for the oversight and long-term growth of a diversified investment portfolio that includes the Inuvialuit Heritage Fund, funds held in trust for the Inuvialuit Harvesters Assistance Program, Community Corporations, and other IRC subsidiaries.

IIC’s mandate is to preserve and grow capital using prudent, risk-aware investment strategies that benefit both current and future generations of Inuvialuit. Its core functions include managing institutional relationships with external fund managers, monitoring market and credit risk, maintaining compliance with asset allocation and investment policy parameters, and reporting on investment performance and portfolio risk exposure. Through disciplined governance and a conservative approach to risk management, IIC ensures the integrity and sustainability of Inuvialuit wealth across generations.

JOB SUMMARY

The Inuvialuit Investment Corporation (IIC) manages approximately $1 Billion of investment assets for the group of companies, with about $1.7 Billion in AUM throughout the Corporation. The Manager of Risk plays a critical role in safeguarding the long-term financial health and sustainability of the Inuvialuit investment assets. This position is responsible for identifying, assessing, monitoring, and mitigating financial, operational, and strategic risks across the organization. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in risk management frameworks, investment risk, and regulatory compliance, with a strong understanding of the unique challenges facing sovereign wealth or pension funds.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develop and implement comprehensive risk management policies, procedures, and frameworks aligned with IIC’s strategic objectives.
  • Monitor and assess risks across investment portfolios, external managers, operations, and enterprise-wide activities.
  • Conduct scenario analysis, stress testing, and risk modeling to evaluate potential impacts on fund performance.
  • Collaborate with external partners, and investment and finance teams to ensure integrated risk oversight.
  • Prepare and present risk reports to senior management, the Board, and the shareholder.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Lead risk assessments for new investment strategies, asset classes, and operational initiatives.
  • Maintain and enhance the fund’s risk register and key risk indicators (KRIs).
  • Support internal and external audits and regulatory examinations.
  • Promote a strong risk culture throughout the organization through training and awareness initiatives

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must be/have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, or a related field (Master’s or professional designation preferred: CFA, FRM, PRM, CAIA).
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in risk management, preferably within a pension fund, asset management, or financial institution.
  • Strong knowledge of investment risk, market risk, credit risk, and operational risk.
  • Proficiency in risk analytics tools and platforms (e.g., Bloomberg, MSCI RiskMetrics, MATLAB, Python, or R).

PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES

  • Strategic thinker with a proactive and solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
  • High ethical standards and commitment to fiduciary responsibility.
