Currently, the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation (MSIFN) is looking for an experienced Water/Wastewater Operator (Wastewater Focused) to join our community and work with our members and management team in Scugog, ON on a full-time basis. The hours of this role are Monday to Thursday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and Friday 8.30 am to 1:00 pm. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required to meet operational needs. Position includes after-hours emergency on-call rotation.

The “Cross-functional” Water/Wastewater Operator under the guidance of the Water Wastewater Manager & Supervisor will deliver continuous, safe, and efficient Water and Wastewater services to the MSIFN Community. With minimal supervision, the incumbent will carry out prescribed monitoring, operation, and maintenance functions in the water and wastewater treatment processes; treatment plants; and in the distribution and collection Systems. The incumbent will also participate in rotational on-call; provide rotational coverage for weekends and holidays for 2 hours each day to test and validate normal working conditions of both the water and wastewater systems. Time spent while providing weekend and holiday coverage will be compensated by taking time off during the normal work week.

• Special projects, assigned tasks, and additional duties as required by the Water Wastewater Manager and Supervisor
• Active participation in meetings and training sessions
• Assist in annual budget preparation for operation and maintenance

• Community college Diploma in an environmental science program or an engineering related program with a focus on the water and/or wastewater principles and technologies
• Minimum OWWCO Class 1 Licenses in Water Treatment and Water Distribution & Supply; and Class 2 Licenses in Wastewater Treatment and Wastewater Collection
• Minimum 4 years operational experience
• An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered as deemed by the hiring panel

• Valid driver’s license; reliable vehicle with $1M liability insurance
• CPIC acceptable upon conditional offer
• Understanding and respect for Indigenous culture, traditions, and community dynamics
• Knowledge of legislation governing First Nations
• Experience in water and wastewater utility
• Competence and experience with tools
• Knowledge of water treatment concepts, technologies, and infrastructure
• Experience with chemical handling, including Sodium Hypochlorite for disinfection
• Experience conducting water/wastewater testing in a laboratory
• Initiative and ability to work independently to meet deadlines
• Problem-solving skills and ability to recommend and implement solutions
• Good interpersonal skills to interact with First Nation residents
• Excellent reading, writing, and communication skills
• Knowledge of Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act 2002 and its Regulations
• Demonstrated facilitation skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email, and Internet
• Experience with databases like Water Trax for data entry and report generation
• Above average math aptitude
• Excellent team player with willingness to assist others
• Formal training in WHMIS and First Aid/CPR
• Understanding of the Ontario Water Resources (OWR) Act and related statutes
• Interest in continuous learning

• Work experience with a First Nation or Indigenous organization
• Additional Indigenous training and education
• MOE Class 2 Licenses in Water Treatment and Water Distribution & Supply
• WHMIS and Health and Safety Certification, First Aid/CPR Certification
• Prior experience in a computerized maintenance management environment
