Shared Value Solutions (SVS) is an environmental and community development consulting firm. Our team includes folks who are skilled in science, cultural heritage, planning, and regulatory fields who work alongside First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Nations across Canada. We support Indigenous Nations with technical guidance, regulatory advice, peer reviews, planning, and negotiation strategies related to major resource development projects. At the heart of our work is a commitment to braiding Indigenous Knowledge with Western science to advance our clients' goals of prosperity, stewardship, and self-determination.

We are seeking anIntermediateConsultant specializing in Community Planningto join our team. This role is ideal for someone with a deep understanding of Indigenous rights, land governance, land use planning, and land management under the First Nation Land Management Act and Indian Act. The successful candidate will support on a range of projects, including the development of culturally grounded community planning policies, community engagement, and providing advice to communities who are signatory to the First Nation Land Management Act.

Responsibilities:

  • Complete planning documents, reports, applications, policies, procedures, permits, etc. for community projects related to land use, governance, community planning, etc., to produce high quality deliverables.
  • Complete primary research, program design, and report writing related to land management and community planning.
  • Lead the delivery of training programs related to land use planning, community planning, energy planning, water management planning, or other knowledge areas.
  • Lead community planning activities including preparing materials and conducting engagement sessions, educational workshops, community meetings, etc.
  • Provide clear and concise reporting and presentations to a variety of audiences, with the ability to communicate environmental and technical topics in plain language.
  • Provide advice to developmental and operational communities who are signatory to the First Nation Land Management Act.
  • Explore and introduce new and innovative solutions for land management and community planning projects.
  • Develop community planning project approaches and workplans to suit clients needs.
  • Facilitating individual and group mapping processes as input to “Traditional Knowledge” studies

Skills and Experience:

  • At least 3-5 years’ work experience as a community planner, or lands office experience, preferably with an Indigenous community.
  • Degree or equivalent experience in planning, geography, environmental studies, or a similar field or, alternatively, an equivalent combination of work experience and learning in an Indigenous community
  • A solid understanding of, and the ability to analyze and advise on the impacts of various federal, provincial, and municipal laws, legislation and decisions on Indigenous communities
  • A solid understanding of land governance, land use planning, and land management under the First Nation Land Management Act and Indian Act.
  • Experience leading planning processes including community engagement
  • Experience and proficiency in writing and working with land and community plans including culturally relevant policy development
  • Ability to facilitate consultation, negotiation and conflict resolution processes
  • Ability to function in a cross-cultural environment
  • Excellent technical writing and analytical skills, including experience with data management and analysis, preparing technical reports, and communicating complex issues in plain language (written, verbal, presentations) for a variety of audiences
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Financial, funding application and project management skills
  • Skills and experience working in cross-cultural settings, preferably with First Nation, Métis, and/or Inuit communities
    A team player with the ability to demonstrate our core values and team code.

Asset Qualifications:

  • Experience in the environmental consulting industry, government, or with Indigenous communities with planning and implementing communication and consultation programs and activities, Traditional Knowledge, land use and occupancy, GIS, community economic development, conflict resolution, capacity building / training, multimedia story-telling.
