Our Chalk River location is looking for a Fire Protection Section Head to be accountable to the Fire Protection Manager for the overall delivery of safe, compliant and efficient operation of the Fire Technical Services department. What will you be doing!

  • Supervising a team of 6-8 Fire Protection Engineers/Specialists.
  • Assisting in goal setting, performance evaluations, career development, disciplinary and promotion actions, and recruiting technical resources (internally and externally).
  • Ensuring the team is working safely and effectively.
  • Providing motivation and technical guidance of the team and for the technical validity of their work.
  • Prescribing the applicable design process, quality elements, and execution of engineering activities as support for work at CNL executed by the Fire Protection Program.
  • Providing technical guidance, review, and approval / acceptance of key engineering documentation issued that form the basis for design, procurement, manufacturing, construction, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of its design or product or service.
  • Executing engineering activities in accordance with prescribed standards and processes and verification planning documents.
  • Ensuring that qualified staff are assigned and trained to perform the work.
  • Reporting back to the Fire Protection Manager whenever issues arise that have potential for negative safety or economic impact.
  • Working collaboratively with peers in other sections in the branch and across CNL.
  • Liaising with support groups, especially Facilities Operations, Radiation Protection, and Quality Assurance, CFEM management as a Subject Matter Expert.
  • Working with the Integrated Work Control team to ensure Hazard Screening Checklists are reviewed and updated, and that appropriately qualified staff are assigned to review IWC requests.
  • Ensuring unplanned impairments are actioned, a fire screening in place and the Fire Protection Manager is informed within a timely manner.
  • Engaging with peers at Universities, Federal Agencies, Global Agencies, and customers as a Subject Matter Expert.
  • Proposing and planning research projects with attention to cost and schedule.
  • Overseeing research project progress including expenditures, monitoring budgetary performance (reporting to Project Lead and Program Director), and maximizing cost effective operation of the groups’ time and space.
  • Advising on technical problems and reviewing work for technical accuracy and adequacy.
  • Effectively using personal and staff time in order to allow completion of work within budget.
  • Identifying opportunities for innovative solutions and partnerships to increase research and commercial impact.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Bachelors (Honours) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing; or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • Experience
    • Eight to ten (8-10) years of experience in Fire Protection Engineering or specialization.
    • Licensed by a provincial engineering association.
    • Knowledge in areas such as fire protection fundamentals, plans examination, sprinklers, building construction and fire protection, CAD, combustion chemistry, electronics, building and fire codes, chemical extinguishing systems, fluid mechanics, hazards of materials, effective technical wiring, fire alarm systems, fire dynamics, hydraulic sprinkler design, sprinkler fitting, fire pumps, fire modelling, hydraulic systems, job estimating and materials management, fire pumps, and fixed suppression.
    • Specialization in Fire Protection Engineering or related experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Solve technical problems and communicate their solutions in an orderly, practical manner.
    • Lead and manage a team through a safety first attitude while navigating multiple projects with conflicting timelines.
    • Work under pressure and with conflicting priorities.
    • Demonstrate good oral communication and writing skills, including the ability to provide presentations to groups of people.
    • Demonstrate computer skills including a good working knowledge of MS Office Products, Autocad, Hydracad and other industry-specific programs.
    • Develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of the existing fire systems on site.
    • Coordinate technical and non-technical staff in the delivery of inspection and maintenance services.
    • Liaise, work and interact with other team members, the Fire Department, building/systems owners, customers and projects effectively.
    • Manage complex and technical projects.
    • Strong understanding of the National Building Code, Canadian Electrical Code, National Fire Code and applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Canadian Underwriters Laboratories CAN/ULC, and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) N293 and N393 standards.
    • Understanding of Canadian nuclear regulatory requirements.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to be on-call on a rotational basis.
  • Overtime or flexible work schedules will occasionally be required.
  • A hybrid work environment is required.
  • Occasional travel to other CNL sites and meetings as required.

Location:

CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible. This role requires that the majority of time worked be at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site while also providing opportunities to work remotely, where possible, if desired by the employee.
