Materials Scientist (Nanomaterials and Bioconjugation Specialist)
Company OverviewGrafton Biosciences is a US-based biotech startup (with offices in Bengaluru) focused on solving cancer and cardiovascular disease through groundbreaking innovations in early detection, diagnostics, and therapeutics. We combine cutting-edge molecular and synthetic biology, machine learning, device engineering, and manufacturing to deliver transformative solutions. Many previous attempts to solve cancer have come up short we intend to be the first to actually solve it. Were looking for passionate team members who want to shape the future of medicine.Role OverviewWe are seeking a skilled Materials Scientist (Nanomaterials and Bioconjugation Specialist) to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing the conjugation of various nanoparticles with surfaces, oligonucleotides, and other biomaterials. Your work will be pivotal in advancing our research and product development in the fields of nanobiotechnology, diagnostics, and advanced materials.Key Responsibilities1. Nanoparticle Development & Characterizationo Synthesize and characterize nanoparticles (e.g., gold nanoparticles, quantum dots, polymeric nanoparticles) for use in bioconjugation.o Develop methods to control nanoparticle size, shape, and surface functionality.o Evaluate nanoparticle properties (surface charge, dispersity, stability, etc.) using advanced analytical techniques.2. Surface Functionalization & Conjugationo Develop protocols for functionalizing surfaces (e.g., glass, polymer films, microfluidic chips) to enable stable and specific nanoparticle attachment.o Perform bioconjugation of nanoparticles with biomolecules (including oligonucleotides, peptides, proteins) and validate the resulting conjugates.o Optimize reaction conditions (e.g., pH, temperature, buffer composition) to ensure reproducible, high-yield conjugations.3. Biomaterials & Biointerfaceso Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (biology, chemistry, engineering) to integrate nanoparticle conjugates into larger systems or devices.o Investigate biocompatibility and functionality of nanomaterial-based interfaces under various conditions.o Conduct assays to confirm molecular recognition, binding specificity, and target functionality of biomolecule-nanoparticle conjugates.4. Method Development & Optimizationo Troubleshoot and refine processes to improve reproducibility, efficiency, and scale-up potential of conjugation protocols.o Introduce new analytical methods (e.g., TEM, SEM, DLS, spectroscopy) to advance research and product development.o Keep up-to-date with emerging trends in materials science, bioconjugate chemistry, and nanotechnology.5. Documentation & Collaborationo Maintain detailed records of experimental design, protocols, and outcomes.o Present findings to internal stakeholders and external collaborators, providing clear documentation and data interpretation.o Prepare technical reports, white papers, and patent filings as needed.Qualifications Education: Ph.D. or Masters Degree in Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a closely related field. Equivalent work experience in nanomaterials, bioconjugation, or related areas may be considered. Technical Experience: Demonstrated experience in the synthesis, surface modification, and characterization of nanoparticles. Hands-on expertise in bioconjugation techniques involving oligonucleotides, peptides, or proteins. Strong background with instrumentation such as TEM, SEM, AFM, NMR, FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, DLS, and others. Familiarity with cleanroom or good laboratory practice (GLP) environments is a plus. Skills & Abilities: Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex data clearly. Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams. Adaptability to a fast-paced research and development environment. Why Join Us Opportunity to lead high-impact, well-funded biotech projects with the potential to transform patient care. Collaborative environment that values innovation, scientific rigor, and professional growth. Competitive compensation package, including benefits and ample opportunities for career advancement.Job Type: Full-time Performance bonusApplication Question(s): In 4 sentences or less, tell us why we should hire you In 4 sentences or less, feel free to tell us anything.
