Job summary

A leading minerals company is seeking a Sustainability Manager for its facilities in Malaysia and South Asia. This role is responsible for implementing QHSE management systems, ensuring compliance with sustainability standards, and overseeing environmental and health safety regulations. The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years of relevant experience, strong knowledge of OHS legislation, and a Bachelor’s or Diploma in Work Health and Safety. An excellent command of English and the ability to manage training programs are essential.

Job description
Sustainability Manager Malaysia & South Asia

Provide Sustainability leadership and support to Omya’s facilities in the Malaysia and India (hereinafter refers to as "Area"). The primary focus of this position is to create and implement an effective QHSE Management System for the Area.

Sustainability Function Management

Plan and implement Sustainability and regulatory compliance programs and projects for properties and processes under management (plants, quarries and mines, and logistics for Omya and TRAD products). Support site operations to maintain full on time compliance for permitting and other requirements for uninterrupted operation.

Oversee the ongoing Sustainability and legal compliance management activities for proper‑ies and processes under management.

Advise on issues of environment and Sustainability to ensure company policy and standards and/or statutory requirements are met.

Prepare property Sustainability assessment reports to benchmark property and process compliance performance and identify potential enhancements to existing sustainable property and process management plans.

Undertake research to maintain a current knowledge base of relevant legislation; ensuring appropriate stakeholders are aware of relevant changes and the impact on current organization activities.

As appropriate, contribute to the preparation of tenders, merger and acquisitions and/or property management service contracts; providing guidance on issues of Sustainability and regulatory compliance so that company's standards and statutory requirements are met.

Manage ISO management system implementation, development and maintenance.

Sites Compliance

Responsible for identifying solutions for specific H&S compliance concerns and addressing them in ways that are economically and technically viable and that may provide strategic advantage to the business.

Plants & mines: identify, assess and manage significant HSE risks that have the potential to disrupt business; Organize plant and mine Sustainability audits and report outcomes, and assist sites to make improvement plans as needed.

Plants under construction, and mines under development: work with Project Manager to manage construction site safety & environmental compliance; Ensure Sustainability requirements are part of the tender and selection process.

Raw Material Suppliers: work with Supply Chain Manager to manage supplied materials safety & environmental compliance; Ensure Sustainability requirements are part of the tender and selection process.

Traded Products: work with Product Manager to ensure products comply with corporate and regulatory requirements, including supplier and logistics management for food grade and chemical warehouses.

Support sites in maintenance of legal compliance and risk assessment registers.

Monitor and maintain environmental and safety compliance requirements on local and national level; Keep up to date with area legal matters.

Facilitate information sharing amongst sites (plants, quarries and mines) within the area.

Establish compliance with key quality, safety/health, and environmental (QSHE) aspects/impacts associated with the work, including relevant legal/other requirements and emergency preparedness and response.

Training and Development

Lead, manage and develop Area Health and Safety by setting and monitoring objectives for training, and assisting with training and development programs at site level.

Job Requirement
Education

University (Bachelor’s Degree) and/or Diploma of Work Health and Safety, or Graduate Certificate in Workplace Health and Safety, NEBOSH.

A registered Occupational Safety & Health Officer ("Green Book" holder) with the Department of Occupational Safety & Health Malaysia is desirable.

Experience

Minimum 7 years of relevant working experience.

ISO9001/14001/45001 management system implementation and lead auditor.

Solid experience in field (practical) work, permitting and licensing, product regulatory compliance in non-metallic mineral processing and open pit quarries for a similar business or industry is preferred.

Demonstrated experience in a construction project Safety role.

Knowledge & Skills

Practical, in-depth working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health (OHS) and Environment legislation related to manufacturing mining, national and relevant international regulations for materials, chemicals, minerals and other product related laws/regulations/requirements.

Plant, Mines – Permits and licenses to operate - Hands on experience in managing site permit requirements for full and on-time compliance for all sites in the area. Practical Working knowledge of local laws, regulations and other requirements.

Experience or ability to train and motivate operations team.

Good analytical skills with ability to write clear and concise reports.

Team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills across different cultures or work environments.

Competent with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Ability to lead HSE development, improvement of sites within country/area.

Other requirements

Excellent command of both oral and written English is required.

Willing to be base in Ipoh with availability to be on site at plant and mine sites in the area on a regular basis, minimum 50% of the time.
