Job summary

A manufacturing company in Penang, Malaysia is seeking an experienced Purchasing Manager to lead their Purchasing team. Key responsibilities include developing effective procurement strategies, conducting sourcing and purchasing activities, and negotiating pricing with suppliers. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of experience in purchasing, excellent leadership skills, and proficiency in ERP systems and MS Office. This role is critical in ensuring timely supply of materials to support production and distribution activities.

Job description
Responsibilities
  • Lead, guide and grow Purchasing team by developing purchasing strategies, sourcing reliable suppliers, and ensuring timely, cost‑effective and quality supply of materials and services that support production and distribution activities.
  • Develop and implement effective procurement strategies aligned with business and supply chain goals.
  • Conduct strategic sourcing and purchasing activities for direct and indirect materials in accordance with the company policies and procedures.
  • Translate production and sales forecasts into purchasing plans to ensure material availability.
  • Identify areas of improvement for both systems and processes as well as establish best practices for purchasing.
  • Support demand planning by monitoring supplier lead times and capacity.
  • Accountable for timely supply of direct and indirect materials to prevent production line downtime and sales revenue shortfall.
  • Maintain strong relationships with key suppliers to ensure reliability, quality, and responsiveness.
  • Negotiate pricing, payment terms, and supply agreements to achieve optimal commercial value.
  • Track and report purchasing KPIs, including cost variance, delivery performance, and supplier reliability.
  • Collaborate closely with Production, QA, R&D, PPC, and Warehouse/Logistics teams to meet operational needs.
  • Monitor PO coverage and its cancellation (ensure zero liability), keep inventory level for raw and packaging material at optimum level and eliminate write‑off cost on material obsolescence.
  • Launch RFQ for POS material from Commercial Team.
  • Support NPD new request and sourcing activities.
  • Prepare monthly management review reports.
  • Review together with Assistant Purchasing Manager on the monthly commodity reports.
  • Plan and prepare department OPEX budget.
  • Review together with Assistant Purchasing Manager on the yearly material budget.
  • Take ownership and responsibility for food safety and its non‑compliance challenges.
Job Requirements
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Purchasing &; Sourcing or related fields.
  • Experience in procurement strategy, supplier management, and negotiation.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience supervising or guiding a team.
  • Good knowledge of purchasing processes for direct and indirect materials.
  • Strong analytical, planning, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proficient in ERP systems and MS Office.
