CONSULTANT PAEDIATRIC INTENSIVIST WITH THE CHILDRENS ACUTE TRANSPORT SERVICE IN PAEDIATRIC CRITICAL CARE TRANSPORT

We are seeking a full-time Consultant with an interest in Paediatric Intensive Care Transport.

The Children's Acute Transport Service (CATS) is a collaborative service based at Great Ormond Street NHS Foundation Trust and is designed to make intensive care rapidly available to critically ill children in North Thames and East Anglia.

The service provides 24 hour, 365 day, Consultant led telephone advice and a triaging facility for all referrals and is committed to improving and developing the provision of critical care and critical care transport for all patients within its scope of care. The CATS service remains the busiest dedicated paediatric intensive care (PIC) transport service in the UK, handling over 2200 referrals and undertaking over 1200 intensive care transports a year.

You will be joining a friendly and dynamic team and this post offers the opportunity to develop an interest in education, training and research.

The successful candidate will have had at least two years specialist paediatric intensive care training and specific experience in paediatric transport. The post will be primarily in paediatric intensive care transport.

You will have the opportunity to continue experience in your chosen base specialty of paediatric intensive care, paediatric anaesthesia, paediatric emergency medicine or paediatric surgery.

Main duties of the job

There are 4 paediatric intensive care facilities within North Thames. The transport service provides a single referral point for hospitals within North Thames who have a critically ill child requiring paediatric intensive care. The service provides initial advice on management and where appropriate, arranges transport of the patient to an appropriate paediatric intensive care unit. This includes patients requiring urgent referral to the cardiac intensive care units at both the Royal Brompton Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital, the general paediatric intensive care units are at St Mary's Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital and at the Royal London Hospital. There are approximately 1200 transfers each year.

CATS also perform the specialist commissioned services below:

  • ECMO assessment transports to GOSH and ECMO repatriations
  • Liver failure transports to King's College Hospital
  • Vein of Galen transports to GOSH.

  • Valid APLS/EPALS Training
  • Higher degree - PhD, MD or equivalent

  • Experience of leading in Clinical Audit processes
  • Experience of teaching students and multi-disciplinary team
  • Awareness of the importance of Clinical Governance through experience of participating in quality or safety improvement projects
  • Published research in peer reviewed journals in relevant area
  • Experience of working in shared care clinics and clinical networks
  • Experience of recruiting patients to clinical research trials
  • Experience of working in shared care clinics and clinical networks
  • Experience of clinical leadership or management
