Transport Planner – Northern Offices

As a Transport Planner, you'll be based in one of our northern offices (Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, or Newcastle), supporting the development of transport strategies, business cases, and wider planning projects. You'll work as part of multidisciplinary teams, delivering technical inputs, analysing data, and contributing to reports and proposals. You'll have opportunities to attend client meetings, learn from experienced colleagues, and grow your career in a collaborative, forward‑thinking environment. Mott MacDonald Ltd. are not currently offering sponsorship to candidates under the Skilled Worker visa route in the UK. We're looking for someone with a genuine interest in shaping the future of transport through policy, strategy, and business case development. You'll bring enthusiasm, analytical thinking, and a collaborative mindset to a team working on some of the UK's most exciting transport projects.

Candidate Specification

You’ll typically have around 2-4 years of post‑graduate experience in transport planning, with exposure to one or more of the following areas: transport policy, strategy, business cases, transport economics, rail and bus planning, or sustainable transport.

Essential Requirements
  • A strong interest in transportation, transport policy and strategy, business cases, placemaking, and sustainability.
  • Degree in a related discipline (or equivalent). This could include Transport Planning, Geography, Engineering, Economics, Urban Planning.
  • The successful candidate will be a member (or working towards membership) of a relevant professional organisation (such as CIHT, CILT, TPS or ICE).
  • Demonstrable skills in at least some of the following: transport policy and strategy, business cases, transport economics, scheme development and appraisal, or sustainable transport planning.
  • Good report writing abilities.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical capabilities, including the ability to manipulate and interpret transport and socio‑economic data using spreadsheets and other tools.
Desirable
  • An MSc or postdegree qualifications in a transport related subject.
  • Use of mapping software packages and GIS skills.
  • An interest or qualification in urban design and experience of working on major movement studies.
  • Knowledge of the North‑West and/or North‑East and regional transport and regeneration market.
  • An understanding of the role of the Department for Transport's Transport Analysis Guidance (TAG) and His Majesty's (HM) Treasury Green Book in scheme development.
