Advanced Cancer Pharmacist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and proactive band 8a advanced cancer pharmacist with previous cancer services experience to work as part of the Oxford Cancer & Haematology Centre's Cancer Pharmacy Team to specialise in Oncology covering maternity cover.

The advanced cancer pharmacist will work as an advanced practitioner in line with the RPS Faculty Advanced Clinical Framework within the four pillars of clinical practice, leadership & management, education & research, with core capabilities in a specific area of clinical competence. The successful candidate will have excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, as well as innovative ideas on improving service delivery and patient care. This post promises to bring opportunities and challenges working within the cancer pharmacy team, giving the successful candidate the chance to develop and extend their clinical and managerial skills at an advanced level.

We will provide you with a comprehensive induction covering all aspects of the work, support from senior pharmacy staff and an environment to develop further.

Main duties of the job
  • To contribute to, deliver, develop and evaluate clinical pharmacy services and medicines optimisation
  • To support and deputise for the Consultant Pharmacists, Highly Advanced Pharmacist/Divisional Lead Pharmacist as appropriate
  • To encompasses the four pillars of clinical practice, leadership and management, education and research, with core capabilities and specialisation in a specific area of clinical specialist practice, and in line with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Advanced Pharmacy Framework (APF).
  • To promote medicines optimisation to ensure evidence based and cost-effective use of treatments.
  • To provide specialised professional and technical education and training to enable the clinical units to meet high standards of patient care and safety.
  • To provide a framework for the safe, efficient and cost effective use of medicine resources within the specialist area.
  • To develop and maintain highly specialist knowledge in medicines used and clinical advances within the specialty. To act as a role model for pharmacy and the wider MDT in the speciality.
  • To be an active member of the pharmacy department and in the specialist area/Directorate team, and ensure continuous two-way exchange of information to maintain high standards of medicines use within the Trust.

Job responsibilities

Key roles include:

  • Line manager for rotational band 7 Specialist Caner Pharmacists
  • Clinical verification of SACT and cancer clinical trial prescriptions
  • Responsibility for pharmacy services within oncology, haematology, Palliative and End of Life Care
  • Audit & research
  • Clinical governance
  • Delivery of high quality pharmaceutical care to adult oncology and haematology in-patients, day-case and out-patients
  • Participating in multidisciplinary ward rounds
  • Super-user and pharmacy trainer for SACT electronic prescribing system
  • Involvement in cancer clinical trials
  • Involvement in licensed and clinical trial advanced therapy medicinal products
  • Active participation in local and national Network groups as appropriate
  • Opportunity for practice research, publications and conference attendance
  • Training of pharmacists and other healthcare professionals

Person Specification
Education,Qualifications
  • First degree in Pharmacy (Masters) or equivalent
  • Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Post-graduate Clinical Pharmacy Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Experience as a clinical tutor for Cardiff or other diploma
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Membership of regional/national/international specialist interest group
  • MSc in Clinical Pharmacy
  • MSc in Cancer
  • RPS Faculty Advanced Level certification in Advanced Pharmacy Practice (APF) Competencies
  • Non-medical prescriber
  • Formal teaching or mentoring training

  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated
  • Capable of working under pressure and must show commitment
  • Professional and personal integrity
  • Ability to work accurately consistently for concentrated periods of time, whilst being interrupted by urgent requests for advice.

  • Understands local and national priorities in cancer care, and has the ability to reconcile these with local realities
  • Demonstrable awareness of key drivers for the NHS
  • Demonstrable awareness of financial pressures/constraints within the NHS
  • Experience of developing drug protocols / contributing to formulary development
  • Experience of preparing budgetary reports for clinical areas
  • Involvement in developing a service within pharmacy
  • Experience of under-taking and supervising audits or drug use evaluations
  • Contributing to publications / conference presentations at least at a regional level.
  • Evidence of contribution to regional specialist interest groups

  • Demonstrable awareness of current cancer issues such as administration of intrathecal chemotherapy and Cancer Standards

  • Portfolio demonstrating advanced level in the four pillars of practice (clinical practice, leadership & Management, education, research) portfolio demonstrating Advanced Level
