The post is for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in Oculo Plastics. This is a permanent post in the Musculoskeletal and Specialist Surgery CMG (MSS) and the Ophthalmology services are based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary within the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

The post holder will be joining the Ophthalmic Oculo Plastics unit which consists of three full‑time Consultants, three Oculo Plastics fellows, and three specialist corneal nurses. We offer super‑specialised clinics including Oculoplastics, Lacrimal and Lids.

The appointee will have a principle interest in Oculo Plastics Ophthalmology and they will be expected to contribute to the Oculo Plastics Ophthalmology service on the Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) site and associated community hospitals and community sites. Participation on the on call rota and in the eye casualty department is essential.

The Ophthalmology Service in UHL is currently providing patient care specialising in the areas of Medical retina, Uveitis, Oculoplastics, Lacrimal, Cornea, Glaucoma, Vitreoretinal surgery, Neuro Ophthalmology and Paediatric Ophthalmology. The service operates through three acute teaching hospitals serving the population of Leicestershire and through peripheral units and community GP sites including Loughborough, Hinckley, Coalville, Melton, Market Harborough, Oakham and several community GP sites.

• Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
• Share with colleagues responsibility for the day to day management of patients.
• Promote new ways of working and co‑ordinating care for patients in the community and ensure that the services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community.
• Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
• Supervise and train junior medical staff.
• Be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.
• Teaching, research and administration.
• Proactively develop the service.
• Actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
• Deliver outpatients and Corneal Graft operating service.
• Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) to be able to successfully revalidate; attend an annual appraisal and keep fully up to date with statutory and mandatory training as stipulated.
• Undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific induction and competency programmes appropriate to the role.
• Provide support when needed in the emergency eye department.
• Act as a point of escalation when the emergency department requires senior consultant advice.
• Provide Consultant Ophthalmology services at the University Hospitals of Leicester.
• Provide Consultant Ophthalmology services by way of Outpatient clinics and Outpatient procedure lists at the University Hospitals of Leicester and in peripheral units.
• Work flexibly and cooperatively with other consultant Ophthalmologists to maximise utilisation of outpatient procedure lists and outpatient clinics.
• Provide emergency Ophthalmology services to patients in Leicestershire on the on call rota.
• Ensure that good standards of practice and care as described in the GMC Guidance "Duties of a Doctor" are followed at all times; report bad practice.
• Ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place; actively participate in audit.
• Work with the Clinical Management Group (CMG) team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance that match – this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future.
• Provide continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their care and for the proper organisation and functioning of clinical practice.
• Work closely with other specialties, departments and outside agencies to deliver the objectives of the Department and CMG.
• Take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trust's "Critical Incident Policy", are reported in a timely manner.
• Participate in yearly appraisal and job planning process.
• Undertake mandatory and statutory training as determined by the Trust and CMG.
• Support allied health professionals in their development.
• Provide a minimum of one session a week in the emergency eye department.

Applicants must already be on the GMC specialist register or within 6 months of the interview date have a certificate of completion of specialist training.

As this post is regulated by the Protection of Children Act 1999, the Criminal Justice Courts Act 2000 and / or the Care Standards Act 2000 an enhanced police criminal records disclosure will be requested by the Trust in the event of a successful application.
