Assistant Professor of Fine Arts, 3D specialist

The American University of Paris invites applications for a full-time position in the Department of Art History and Fine Arts at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning 1 August 2026.

The Position:

The candidate should be experienced with traditional and contemporary art techniques related to volume and design, and/or architecture methodologies. The candidate should be able to teach sculpture classes at all levels (beginning, intermediate, and advanced), special topics classes, and capstone courses like the Junior and Senior Seminars. The candidate will have good knowledge of and the ability to teach the history of their discipline, demonstrate a deep knowledge of the materials, techniques, and processes of their specialty (sculptures, objects, or buildings). The candidate will have a good mastery of computer tools and digital 3D technology, and knowledge of past and current research methodology applied to their domain. Administrative experience (such as Program Coordinator or Department Chair) and interest in curricular development are desirable. An interest in supervising the university gallery and/or the student gallery space is also a plus.

Qualifications:

M.F.A., Master's degree in Design or M. Arch (or the international equivalent) in hand. University teaching experience is required. Proven capacity in creative projects, research, and engaged interactive teaching. Familiarity with liberal arts education, learning objectives, skill development, and assessment is highly desirable. The candidate must be able to speak and write in English. French fluency is desired but not required. The capacity to work in a multi-cultural environment is a strong plus. European Union citizenship or legal right to work in France is not necessary at the time of application.

The Department:

The Department of Art History and Fine Arts offers a major in Art History and a major in Fine Arts. We also welcome minors in art history, fine arts, and visual culture. The Fine Arts section is involved in the university's Liberal Arts program, offering students from other disciplines an opportunity to explore its creative and reflective methodologies. Exchanges with other disciplines are encouraged, as well as the integration of Applied Arts into Fine Arts. Students develop a solid base in art history, learn and practice various media, and deepen their knowledge of materials and techniques. They are encouraged to explore creative methodologies and develop critical thinking skills to become autonomous and informed creative producers. This is facilitated by small class sizes and exchanges within the university and with visiting artists. Regular visits to exhibitions, museums, and workshops in Paris and throughout Europe expand classroom offerings.

• The teaching load is six courses per academic year.
