Job description

Would you like to support our Environmental Remediation Management Mission (ERM) across Canada? Are you a leader with experience driving, implementing, and developing maintenance procedures and processes in Waste Management? If so, in this role, you would be providing technical and strategic support to the ERM Mission by ensuring that regulatory requirements are reflected in Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) processes and procedures implemented across CNL sites. If you can see yourself in this role, then this may be the job for you! Apply Today!

What will you be doing!

  • Assisting program officers in planning, determining and reporting waste management surveillance in the organization to ensure regulatory requirements are being met.
  • Leading and coordinating Waste Management Function Team members in delivering process improvement initiatives.
  • Conducting key communication and stakeholder management activities to ensure process improvement initiatives are successful and sustainable.
  • Identifying and addressing gaps in existing Waste Management Function requirements, processes, and procedures through observations, assessments, and reviews at CNL’s sites and through benchmarking against other non-CNL facilities (nuclear & non-nuclear).
  • Communicating function requirements and opportunities for improvement through:
    • Assisting in developing and delivering Waste Management Function training,
    • Presenting on Waste Management Function requirements at employee (safety, branch, interest group) meetings and
    • Project support discussions.
  • Supporting the development of long-term Waste Management Function growth.
  • Performing other duties in support of CNL’s Waste Management Function.
  • Acting as Waste Management Function Manager as required.
  • Contributing to proposals for new commercial projects and identifying opportunities where CNL can leverage its knowledge and capabilities.
  • Providing mentorship and guidance to Waste Management Function Program Officers.
  • Working with Senior Business Planner to ensure robust field schedules are in place to implement process improvement initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Bachelor's Degree in the field of Engineering or Applied Sciences or demonstrated experience related to the post.
  • Experience
    • Strong Technical background in Waste Management Processes.
    • Experience in nuclear waste management is desirable.
    • Radiation Protection (RP) Group 3 qualified (or be able to be RP Group 3 qualified once hired).
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Strong verbal communication skills, both technical writing and review skills, and the ability to work effectively with personnel of varying disciplines.
    • Able to direct the work of scientific, engineering, technical, and operational personnel.
    • High level of motivation; can work independently and in a team environment.
    • Demonstrated leadership experience in strategic planning.
    • Comprehensive understanding of Radioactive Waste Packaging requirements.
    • Practical working knowledge of the full lifecycle of Waste Management Processes internally and internationally;
    • Intermediate computer skills, including working knowledge of MS Office Suite and familiarity with the use of databases.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to wear protective clothing and conduct assessments within nuclear facilities, including Waste Management Areas.
  • Occasionally require working extended days and/or outside standard working hours (e.g., evenings or weekends) to support high-priority operation activities (estimated at less than once per month).
  • Travel to offsite locations will be required.

Why CNL?

Does working with a team across Canada to advance nuclear science and technology for a clean and secure world speak to you? We're reinventing ourselves to be the pacesetters so we can lead the charge in solving the problems that matter, like building the next generation of clean nuclear and hydrogen energy solutions, developing new and better-targeted cancer treatments, and continuing to lead the world in environmental remediation.

We offer a complete total rewards package:

  • Paid time off (vacation, sick, floater & personal);
  • Benefits effective day one, that’s right, no waiting period;

  • and a pension!

  • Clean energy for today and tomorrow.
  • Restore and protect the Environment.
  • Contribute to the health of Canadians.

Location:

CNL’s Chalk River laboratory is nestled in the Ottawa Valley and affords our employees an environmentally pristine area with extensive forests, hills, and numerous small lakes. These support a variety of wildlife typical to the southern edge of the Canadian Shield. Many surrounding towns, such as Pembroke, Petawawa, and Deep River, provide unparalleled outdoor adventures at your doorstep!

CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible. This role requires that the majority of time worked be at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site while also providing opportunities to work remotely, where possible, if desired by the employee.

As an organization, CNL recognizes and appreciates their historic connection to this place. CNL also recognizes the contributions that First Nations, Métis, Inuit and other Indigenous Peoples have made, both in shaping and strengthening this community in particular, and this province and country as a whole.
