A prominent educational institution in Ontario seeks a Police Officer responsible for maintaining safety and enforcing law on campus. The candidate will patrol areas, respond to emergencies, and engage with the community. Qualifications include a high school diploma, U.S. citizenship, and the ability to perform physical duties. This full-time position offers competitive salary and benefits.
The Police Officer at the University of Kansas is a commissioned law enforcement position with full authority under applicable law. The Police Officer performs duties in accordance with departmental rules and regulations, state laws, city ordinances, law enforcement codes of ethics, the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, and general principles of law enforcement and police work. Those who do not have certification as a law enforcement officer in Kansas will be sent to the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center to complete the required training. The Police Officer regularly conducts criminal investigations, performs searches and seizures, arrests offenders, presents criminal cases to prosecutors for prosecution in district and municipal courts, responds to medical and other emergencies, writes moving traffic violations, and assists other local law enforcement agencies. The Police Officer will be briefed by the Police Sergeant on special assignments or unusual circumstances. Further duties are outlined in the Responsibilities section.

30% - Patrols assigned areas by foot or vehicle, responds to signs of trouble, and takes appropriate action. Investigates, testifies in court, confers with other law enforcement agencies, and collects, analyzes and verifies information from interviews. Maintains control of traffic and pedestrian movement on campus, issues traffic citations as appropriate, and enforces traffic laws. managess accident scenes, photographs or sketches diagrams, and collects and preserves physical evidence. Interviews complainants, witnesses and suspects. Maintains safety and public order under various conditions.
20% - Completes written reports in compliance with department procedures. Determines report necessity, completes reports promptly, and initiates follow-up reports as needed. Packages and documents evidence, maintains organized narrations, and tracks lost and found property. Disseminates information to the public and develops/community programs to improve relations with the community.
10% - Apprehends and/or arrests violators, testifies as a professional witness when summoned, and assists with the training mission of the department.
10% - Responds to emergency situations, makes quick decisions, renders aid, operates emergency vehicle safely, and maintains safety with minimal property damage.
10% - Establishes professional contact with university employees, residents and others to obtain cooperation and maintain order. Communicates effectively with diverse groups, presents policies and procedures, and maintains a professional demeanor.
5% - Maintains proficiency with all equipment including firearms, batons, handcuffs and vehicles; maintains equipment in good repair; coordinates maintenance and repair of police vehicles.
5% - Maintains relationships with community resource groups and other law enforcement agencies; listens to community concerns and provides assistance when possible.
5% - Maintains annual law enforcement certification(s) as required by state statute; qualifies with duty weapons; completes required departmental training; stays current on laws and department activities; maintains first aid certification.
5% - Carries out duties with short notice in varied conditions; may supervise others; may provide training to new officers; may perform surveillance operations and extended duties as needed.
