Environmental Health & Safety Specialist (Forestry Operations)

Kapuskasing-Hearst ON

GreenFirst is looking for an Environmental Health & Safety specialist to provide effective services and technical expertise related to Health, Safety, Environment & Site Protection.

Responsibilities
  • Promote and provide a safe workplace, seek improvements, support Health & Safety Program.
  • Support compliance with collective agreement and sound union/management/employee relations.
  • Reports to the Vice President, Forestry Operations.
  • Identify innovative ideas and implement activities to seek improvements, in order to promote awareness and provide a safe workplace.
  • Develop and Support Health and Safety programs and ensure the effective implementation and maintenance through the accountable managers.
  • Act as liaison with external service providers.
  • Act as a Health, Safety and Site Protection resource person to all site employees.
  • Participate in various committees to ensure the consistent application of health, safety and Site protection practices.
  • Communicate Health, Safety, Environment and Plant Protection regulations and internal policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a communications program to keep all employees informed.
  • Frequent travel between Kapuskasing, Hearst and forestry operations sites.
  • Maintain and distribute H & S Management Systems, policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and meet Health & Safety budgets, explain variances and take appropriate corrective action as required.
  • Identify and keep up to date with new regulations and innovations to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of H & S services.
  • Develop, manage and maintain a system to provide safety statistics and reports to identify trends and preventative action while minimizing costs.
  • Identify and provide training, oversight and guidance to the Emergency Response Team (ERT), as necessary.
  • Complete various compliance controls, inspections and audits of all Environment & safety activities.
  • Establish, maintain, and apply systems and training to provide effective ERT services in compliance with Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) and Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Specification (OHSAS) (iso 18001) standards.
  • Manage WSIB program.
  • Manage site security.
  • Other related duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Education: University degree or equivalent.
  • Experience: 5 years in an industrial environment.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, Environment, industrial hygiene and health and safety best practices.
  • Leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Language: English (spoken and written) and French would be considered an asset.

  • Élaborer et soutenir des programmes de santé et de sécurité, et veiller à leur mise en œuvre et à leur maintien efficace par l'intermédiaire des gestionnaires responsables.
  • Assurer la liaison avec les prestataires de services externes.
  • Agir en tant que personne-ressource en matière de santé, de sécurité et de protection des installations pour tous les employés du site.
  • Participer à divers comités afin de garantir l'application cohérente des pratiques en matière de santé, de sécurité et de protection des installations.
  • Communiquer les réglementations et les politiques et procédures internes en matière de santé, de sécurité, d'environnement et de protection des installations.
  • Maintenir un programme de communication afin de tenir tous les employés informés.
  • Voyages réguliers entre Kapuskasing, Hearst et les sites des opérations forestières.
  • Maintenir et diffuser les systèmes, politiques et procédures de gestion de la santé et de la sécurité.
  • Préparer et respecter les budgets consacrés à la santé et à la sécurité, expliquer les écarts et prendre les mesures correctives appropriées si nécessaire.
  • Identifier et se tenir au courant des nouvelles réglementations et innovations afin d'accroître l'efficacité et l'efficience des services de santé et de sécurité.
  • Développer, gérer et maintenir un système permettant de fournir des statistiques et des rapports sur la sécurité afin d'identifier les tendances et les mesures préventives tout en minimisant les coûts.
  • Identifier et fournir une formation, une supervision et des conseils à l'équipe d'intervention d'urgence (ERT), si nécessaire.
