VISION

At the Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA), we celebrate and honour the safety and healing of Indigenous Women and Girls as they take up their leadership roles in the family, community, provincially, nationally and internationally for generations to come.

SCOPE

The Registered Nurse (RN) will integrate knowledge from public health sciences, primary health care, nursing science, and the social sciences to promote, protect and preserve the health of Indigenous women and their families. The RN will be responsible for providing safe, quality access to culturally sensitive health care to Indigenous women, their families, and communities, based on each community member’s individual needs.

The RN will provide support to the provision of health services in a community setting. As directed by the Community Development Manager of Health Programs, the RN will mentor, guide, and provide direction to the RPN staff within their scope of practice. The RN will provide nursing care to attendees at community-based clinics, in the outreach mobile unit, during events. The RN is responsible for developing and facilitating public health teaching and will provide nursing care within the community. The RN will contribute to program development, education and training of staff and community.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario to practice as a Registered Nurse with current unrestricted registration status.
  • Nursing Diploma or bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, from a recognized and accredited program, with minimum 5 years’ experience in public health, community, hospital, or similar area of nursing.
  • Experience with vaccinations and immunization is preferred and considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to the Practice Standards and Guidelines set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario as they relate to the public health practice setting.
  • Ability to understand and use the nursing process with individualized care plans and planning.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in establishing and maintaining therapeutic nurse-client relationships with individuals, families, and groups from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate using written, verbal, non-verbal, and technical skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering programming, education, and training to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to form professional and collaborative working relationships and function as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and maintain high performance standards while practicing independently to achieve results.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply the values of accountability, cost-consciousness, equity, excellence, honesty, innovation, leadership, and teamwork.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in reflective practice and in constructive dialogue about professional development.
  • Understanding of public health (Community Wellbeing) Systems and Indigenous health care systems.
  • Understanding of the history and jurisdictional issues that impact Indigenous women and their families and communities collectively.
  • Understanding of Indigenous culture and traditional practices.
  • Strong organizational, project management and time management skills, with the ability to plan, and manage time effectively.
  • Must be dependable, able to follow instructions, respond to management direction and be able to improve performance through management feedback.
  • Capacity to solve problems, critically think and to see different perspectives.
  • Highly motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision and under pressure.
  • Able to follow through on assigned duties independently with strict deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Not-For-Profit Organizations.
  • Proficient working knowledge of MS Office Software, internet, and general office equipment.
  • This position requires travel.
  • This position includes regular evening and weekend work.
  • Reliable vehicle, appropriate vehicle insurance coverage and valid Ontario 'G' class driver's license.
  • Current, valid vulnerable sector criminal records check. Valid 1st Aid/CPR.
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous Language is considered an asset.

The full salary range for this role is $69,900 - $86,230 ONWA conducts annual performance reviews, and employees may be eligible for salary adjustments based on performance outcomes and available funding.
