Descripción del empleo

The Cape Breton University (CBU) invites applications for a Full-Time Continuing position in the School of Education and Health in the Health Sciences Department as the rank of Lab Technologist. This position will commence January 2, 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter).

CBU is one of Canada’s youngest and most ambitious universities with a comprehensive set of liberal arts, science and professional programs and a unique commitment to community, economic development, aboriginal learning and research into many aspects of environment and culture. Currently home to approximately 5000 students, CBU’s vision of higher education allows students to pursue diverse fields of study in programs with national reputations in final year student satisfaction, faculty-student interaction and employability.

CBU delivers an authentic multicultural experience to all who become part of its academic community. Surrounded by pristine natural landscape, vibrant culture, and welcoming communities on Canada’s stunning east coast, CBU attracts students from more than 50 countries around the world. Our faculty bring passion to their teaching and research and we are known for our friendly and inclusive culture. Strong community involvement and a spirit of entrepreneurship enhance CBU’s position in post-secondary education.

The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge and work experience in the field of microbiology. Two years of previous experience in a teaching laboratory setting is preferred.

The successful candidate will also primarily teach labs within the Health Sciences Department, supporting students in the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) program, as well as those in Nursing, Environmental Engineering Technology, Nutrition and Science. Courses may include Microbiology, Foodborne Disease, Bio contaminants in Indoor Environments, Environmental Microbiology, Medical Microbiology and other related courses as assigned.

The successful candidate may also become involved in other offerings in the Health Sciences Department. Other main responsibilities include maintaining lab supplies and lab premises, liaising with faculty, advising students and participating in promotional and recruitment activities.

The Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) program at CBU is one of only six in Canada accredited by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) and the only program of its kind in Atlantic Canada. Offered since 1996, the program has a strong reputation and established partnerships with community organizations, government agencies and industry.

Applicants should have an appropriate undergraduate degree. Candidates pursuing or already have obtained a Master’s degree in an appropriate field are preferred. Candidates with teaching experience at the post-secondary level are strongly encouraged to apply. Research is not an expectation with this position. Candidates with a certification such as RM and/or CPHI are preferred.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a thorough grasp of the discipline, excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, a commitment to continuous professional development, an appreciation of cultural diversity, and commitment to a high quality of teaching and service to CBU, the community and the profession. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team within the Department of Health Sciences. Willingness to use online teaching and learning platforms such as Moodle and other educational technologies, is required.

The union affiliation for this position is with the Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union, local 18, Teachers Bargaining Unit.

Applications for the successful candidate will include:

  • a letter of application quoting the reference number (176) and identifying your education and experience as it relates to this position;
  • evidence of teaching effectiveness;
  • three current, work-related letters of reference (sent directly to terrilynn_laffin@cbu.ca).

Please upload all required documents to Additional Documents if no designated area is listed. Incomplete applications may not be considered.
