As a Post Anesthetic Care Nurse (PACU) recovery room nurse you will specialize in providing care for patients who are recovering from anesthesia after surgery or other medical procedures.

Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) provides direct nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia. The role includes assessment, planning, delivering, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care.

Responsibilities
  1. Assess post anaesthetic patients by collecting and evaluating information from a variety of sources, making a nursing diagnosis, and determining appropriate nursing interventions.
  2. Provide nursing care to address critical care needs of patients according to physicians' and anaesthetists' orders, initiating immediate treatment if required and modifying care as needs change.
  3. Communicate and share information with interdisciplinary health care team members, collaborating to identify and resolve issues and adjust care plans as required.
  4. Coordinate nursing care for the patient; set priorities, assign and delegate tasks to support staff, and make referrals to the interprofessional care team according to established protocols and practice standards.
  5. Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff by following sound bacteriological and preventative medicine principles and familiarizing with fire and other emergency procedures.
  6. Establish a therapeutic relationship by demonstrating empathy, trust, and respect, advocating for the patient’s rights to privacy, dignity, and access to information, and ensuring the patient’s choice and autonomy in decision making and care planning.
  7. Document assessments, nursing diagnosis, observations, interventions, patient/family responses, outcomes/evaluations, and referrals according to practice standards and Fraser Health procedures.
  8. Participate on nursing committees, care conferences, and councils as assigned or with the Manager.
  9. Participate in research and quality improvement activities by identifying patient care issues, collecting data, and making recommendations for corrective action.
  10. Participate in in‑services and other educational programs, identifying learning goals and maintaining current clinical competence within the area of practice.
  11. Act as a preceptor or mentor to assigned new nursing staff and students; share information, demonstrate care activities, and participate in orientation.
  12. Provide feedback to the Manager regarding effectiveness of patient care programs, policy/clinical decision support tools (e.g., clinical pathways, standards, order sets, and procedures), and equipment.
  13. Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing. Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). One year recent relevant clinical nursing experience in the designated clinical area and completion of postgraduate coursework and/or certification applicable to the area, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Clinical proficiency in the designated clinical area.
  • Proficiency in initiating and maintaining Intravenous Therapy.
  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessment and apply nursing theory to provide care through appropriate interventions.
  • Ability to recognize acuity changes.
  • Ability to determine and deal with emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, the public, staff, and the interprofessional team.
  • Ability to promote person‑centered care and advocate for patients.
  • Ability to integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to problem‑solve.
  • Ability to teach and instruct patients and families about topics essential to health care.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to collaborate and promote cooperation among interprofessional team members.
  • Ability to use relevant research‑based evidence to support nursing decisions.
  • Ability to operate related equipment and computer applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of this position.
