Job Title: Distribution Technologist
Job Description
As a Distribution Technologist, you will be part of an engineering team, tasked with the maintenance and expansion of civil and electrical projects. Projects involve the installation, alteration, extension, and/or repair of a variety of electrical and civil equipment; controlled, monitored, and/or automated by complex circuitry, electronics, and advanced communication networks.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, create, modify, or review civil and electrical design such as Cable Chamber/Vault, equipment layouts, mechanical drawings, highway crossing, train track crossing, bridge crossing, etc.
- Complete drawings in accordance with Subsurface Utility Engineering Standards using Microstation.
- Review and calculate invert data for congested civil subsurface utility design to generate sufficient profile/cross sections.
- Read, understand, and interpret various types of underground civil utility drawings.
- Perform initial Quality Control (QC) of field deliverables according to standards and best practices.
- Communicate directly with field staff if there are any questions or clarifications required within the documents received from the field.
- Organize and review all field documents and files for completeness.
- Ensure that utility record drawings are collected, complete, and reviewed thoroughly. This includes any drawings and plans provided by the client.
- Understand and correlate between utility records, construction plans, and field documents (sketches/notations/survey files) to document the presence of underground and/or aerial utilities.
- Complete various types of deliverables and supporting documents, including Drawings, Reports, Traffic Control Plans (as per OTM Book 7), etc.
Essential Skills
- 2-6 years of Civil or Electrical Design Experience (Overhead/Underground Distribution)
- 2-6 years of experience with Microstation (Proficient with the software)
- Drafting knowledge (Two-dimensional drafting knowledge)
- Experience with Pole loading analysis, Voltage drop calculations, and Cable pulling calculations (Can have 2/3 of these skills)
- Ambition to learn Civil or Electrical Design, underground utilities, overhead utilities, and utility design
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Engineers or technologists are both eligible for this position.
- EIT, CET, or relevant certificates are supported for credential development.
- Experience doing design in downtown Toronto in congested areas with other utility lines (Telecom, Gas lines, Water, Waste, Storm, etc.).
- AutoCAD experience is an asset - transferable skills from AutoCAD to Microstation are considered.
- SpidaCalc experience is an asset.
- Experience with a Design Build Contractor is preferred.
Work Environment
For the first 6 months, the work is fully on-site from Monday to Friday with expected work hours of 8 am to 4 pm. These hours are flexible for appointments or personal reasons. After 6 months, the schedule shifts to a hybrid model with 3 days in the office and 2 days working from home. Tuesday and Thursday are mandatory office days, with the candidate choosing the third office day. The work environment is dedicated to maintaining a trusting and flexible atmosphere. The Design Team includes 26 members, offering opportunities for mentorship and growth whether the candidate is an engineer or a technician.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $44.00/hr.
