Requirements
- Qualification: Grade 12 with physical science & Mathematics,
- Certificate in MEC or SAIOH registration as an Occupational Hygienist & Intermediate certificate in MEC.
- Training, via courses, formal training or practical experience in: Legislation, Management system formulation and implementation, Safety, Health and Environmental integration, Hazard identification and risk assessment, Extensive computer literacy.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience as a C‑Upper.
- Experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of management systems and database formulation.
- Sound knowledge pertaining to people management.
- Working knowledge of specialist Ventilation and Refrigeration computer simulation programs.
- Medically fit to work in the specific business area.
- Clear security screening record.
- Valid driver’s license.

Key Responsibilities
- Compliance measurements
- Scheduling and conducting of occupational hygiene measurements for compliance to Section 12 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
- Compile occupational hygiene and ventilation risk assessments for compliance to Section 11 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
- Establish a system to understand and mitigate occupational hazards in terms of the Section 12 of the Mine Health and safety Act.
- Statutory plans are in place and up to date (Ventilation plans and mine rescue plans).
- Assist in the implementation and maintenance of emergency preparedness programmes in compliance to Chapter 16 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
- Assist in the implementation and maintenance of Emergency preparedness programmes.
- Assist in the implementation and maintenance of fire prevention programmes in compliance to Chapter 5 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
- Measure compliance to the Environmental Engineering and Occupational Hygiene Regulations of the Mine Health and Safety Act pertaining to monitoring and reporting at Business Area level.
- Ensure and assure legal compliance as well as a safe and healthy work environment, to ensure minimized pure risk, litigation exposure and adverse publicity.
- Ensuring adherence to all ventilation and company policies, procedures and standards.
- Conducting Ventilation and Occupational hygiene projects, surveys, research and audits.
- Advising on ventilation and occupational hygiene problems.
- Advising on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimise the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices.
- Interpreting and act on ventilation and occupational hygiene related legislation.
- Participate in mining Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene technology studies.
- Reporting Legal:
- Ensure compliance to legal reporting requirements for ventilation and occupational hygiene (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually).
- Meet time deadlines pertaining to reporting (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually)
- Annual updating, recording and reporting of occupational related exposure histories.
- Annual statistical analysis of ventilation and occupational hygiene data per workplace or section of the business area. Operational:
- Provide information on ventilation and occupational hygiene matters related to a specific workplace or section of the business area.
- Report and advise on ventilation and occupational hygiene findings and trends.
- Advises on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimize the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices.
- Contribute to the achievement of the objectives and targets of the Environmental Engineering Department and those of the business area by
- Participating and supporting the development and acceptance of business plans and strategies.
- Ensure continuous improvement of the ventilation and occupational hygiene programmes and systems by means of integration, optimisation and maintenance of such systems. Maintain ventilation and occupational hygiene strategies and systems by
- Assist in the development of best practices, standards and procedures.
- Assist in ventilation and occupational hygiene planning, technical systems, and administration.
- Provide solutions to specific Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene matters (known or identified via trend analysis).
- Sets daily, weekly and monthly ventilation and occupational hygiene targets.
- Provide ventilation, refrigeration and occupational hygiene technical expertise to the operations.
- Ensure that the area of responsibility within the specific section can maintain or improve on their current systems in line with the strategic plans and resource constraints.
- Ventilation reviews to ensure appropriate working conditions at the operations.
- Determining the need for plans and plan revisions.
- Ensure that legal requirements, group standards and policies are adhered to by: Achieving legal compliance
- Interpretation of legal requirements.
- Ensures adherence to legal compliance through monitoring and reporting.
- Measure compliance to the Environmental Engineering and Occupational Hygiene Regulations of the Mine Health and Safety Act pertaining to monitoring and reporting at Business Area level.
- Responsible to ensure that policies, programmes, standards, codes of practice and procedures are maintained in accordance with legal and Group requirements.
